A Continental United States Climatology of Precipitation Whiplash Using a New Event‐Based Definition

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Precipitation whiplash events have been increasingly studied over the recent decade, however, no studies have considered the spatial coherence of grid points in their examination. Therefore, we developed an algorithm that defines spatially coherent precipitation whiplash events on the subseasonal‐to‐seasonal timescale between 1915 and 2020 which can be

First in new environmental spacecraft series to be launched [PDF]

open access: yes
A series of operational meteorological monitoring satellites (TIROS-N) is described. Emphasis is placed on environmental monitoring instruments onboard the satellites that provide technological advances over previous sensors.

Development of advanced instrumentation for operational oceanography [PDF]

open access: yesWIT Transactions on Modelling and Simulation, Vol 46, 2007
Operational oceanography is an applied science requiring new instrumentation to perform cost effective surveys. The use of XBT probes from Voluntary Observing Ships is a good way to obtain temperature profiles, but it is limited by the cost of the probes and of the operators on board. An automatic multiple XBT launcher was developed, to work unattended

Impacts of Low‐Level Jets on Moisture Transport to the Pantanal, Brazil

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
The moisture transports from the tropics to the subtropics by the low‐level jets (LLJs) east of the Andes crossing the Pantanal region. Four LLJs, east of the Andes, were identified and selected with correspondent Lagrangian moisture transport. The LLJ moisture source regions contribute to Pantanal (~63.5%) and precipitation increased (~30%) during LLJ

Modular Autonomous Biosampler (MAB)- A prototype system for distinct biological size-class sampling and preservation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Presently, there is a community wide deficiency in our ability to collect and preserve multiple size-class biologic samples across a broad spectrum of oceanographic platforms (e.g. AUVs, ROVs, and Ocean Observing System Nodes).

Jens Eggvin - A Norwegian pioneer in operational oceanography

open access: yes, 2002
No abstracts are to be cited without prior reference to the author.Jens Eggvin (1899-1989) was employed at the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) in Bergen as head of its physical oceanographic activities in 1933. He followed a Norwegian tradition in relating the physical conditions of the ocean with fisheries.

Intensification of Flash and Long‐Term Droughts in the Danube River Basin: A Multi‐Scale Analysis Using Satellite‐Derived Evaporative Stress Index and Soil Water Index

open access: yesInternational Journal of Climatology, EarlyView.
Analysed drought intensification in the Danube using Evaporative Stress Index (ESI) and Soil Water Index (SWI). Flesh drought detection: developed thresholds for rapid drought detection using ESI‐4Wk and SWI‐40. Multi‐layer analysis: combined atmospheric stress and soil moisture to assess drought impacts.
