Multifaceted Suppression of Staphylococcal Virulence Phenotypes: In Vitro Study of a Cellular Status With Reduced Agr Activity and Impaired Biofilm

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 5, October 2026.
Finding of in vitro S. aureus status with reduced Agr activity and impaired biofilm. ABSTRACT Anti‐quorum sensing (QS) therapy has been focused on to reduce the virulence of pathogenic bacteria. However, there is a risk that suppression of the staphylococcal QS Agr system might promote biofilm formation.

Emergence of a Novel, Phenotypically Difficult‐to‐Detect Vancomycin‐Resistant Enterococcus faecium Clone (ST117/CT7799)

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 5, October 2026.
A newly emerged vanB‐VREfm clone (ST117/CT7799) causes an ongoing outbreak in southeastern Austria. The cluster is highly homogenous, even for isolates sampled months apart. Resistance is easily missed via disk diffusion, gradient tests, and microdilution. VITEK 2 testing reliably detects vancomycin‐resistance.

Characterisation of Typical Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (tEPEC) and bfpA Genes From Five Bat Species Reveals Australian Pteropus Spp. Are Natural tEPEC Hosts

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 5, October 2026.
This study revealed that Australia's five Pteropus bat species are all natural hosts of typical Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli (tEPEC)—historically considered a human‐specific pathogen. Across the five Pteropus spp., tEPEC prevalence ranged between 14.2% and 37.0%, with 18 bat‐specific tEPEC strain types and 24 bat‐specific bfpA allele types ...

Interrogating the Escherichia coli Epitranscriptome Via CRISPR Interference and Nanopore Native RNA Sequencing

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 5, October 2026.
Epitranscriptomics is understudied in bacteria but has the ability to modulate antimicrobial resistance, virulence and pathogenicity. Pitt et al. implement two cutting‐edge techniques: CRISPR interference and Nanopore direct RNA sequencing along with functional assays to study RNA modifications in Escherichia coli.

First Report of blaCTX‐M‐15 in a Marine Thermotolerant Enterobacter Isolate From Bangladesh: Genomic Insights Into Halotolerance and Antimicrobial Resistance

open access: yesMicrobiologyOpen, Volume 15, Issue 5, October 2026.
Marine‐derived Enterobacter kobei, exhibiting thermotolerance and salt tolerance, is ESBL‐producing and harbors AMR genes (blaCTX‐M‐15, qnrS1) and mobile genetic elements, indicating environmental spread of antimicrobial resistance. ABSTRACT Marine ecosystems are becoming important reservoirs for antimicrobial resistance (AMR). However, genomic data on
