Metabolization of Flavan‐3‐ol Oligomers by Eggerthella lenta, a Human Gut Bacterium

open access: yesMolecular Nutrition &Food Research, Volume 70, Issue 19, 15 October 2026.
Novel human gut bacterial strains were isolated and characterized for their ability to metabolize flavan‐3‐ols. While Eggerthella lenta and Flavonifractor plautii metabolized flavan‐3‐ol monomers, only E. lenta converted B‐ and A‐type procyanidins, demonstrating that this gut bacterium can metabolize flavan‐3‐ol oligomers.

Two distinct alcohol dehydrogenase classes mediate bacterial 2‐hydroxyethylphosphonate catabolism

open access: yesProtein Science, Volume 35, Issue 10, October 2026.
Abstract Phosphonates are molecules containing a direct carbon‐phosphorus bond. In nature, these compounds are produced by a variety of organisms, and many environmental microbes are able to degrade specific phosphonates and feed on them. This work focuses on 2‐hydroxyethylphosphonate (HEP)—a natural compound that is found frequently in the environment,

Ectomycorrhizal communities underlie trade‐offs between greater long‐term tree growth and reduced soil carbon concentrations in boreal forests

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 10, October 2026.
This study demonstrates that specific ectomycorrhizal fungal taxa are associated with trade‐offs between greater tree growth and reduced soil carbon concentrations in boreal forests. This work presents field‐based evidence consistent with the emerging understanding that ectomycorrhizal fungi influence ecosystem carbon stocks through the enzymatic ...

Identification of Molecular Pathways Underlying Mn(II) Oxidation in Pseudomonas resinovorans

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 10, October 2026.
Transposon mutagenesis in biofilter‐associated Pseudomonas resinovorans MOB‐513 identifies a c‐di‐GMP‐dependent regulatory network involving type IV pili, two‐component systems, and diguanylate cyclases that controls Mn(II) oxidation and biofilm formation, providing new insight into microbial manganese cycling and biofilter performance.

Patterns of Functional Redundancy and Anaerobic Metabolic Potential Characterise the Skin Microbiome of a Critically Endangered Sawfish

open access: yesEnvironmental Microbiology, Volume 28, Issue 10, October 2026.
The largetooth sawfish skin supports a distinct microbiome enriched in anaerobic metabolic and dormancy potential, consistent with microbial persistence under low‐oxygen conditions. Greater among‐individual taxonomic variability coupled with functional redundancy potential supports a lottery‐like mechanism of microbiome assembly.
