The adaptive significance of some aspects of the reproductive biology of egg laying reptiles is considered. Experimental evidence is provided that at the moment of egg laying the embryo of Testudo graeca ibera Pallas, 1814 and Macrovipera lebetina obtusa (Dwigubsky, 1832) already have the necessary level of steadiness to the ambient temperature.
