Fossil Ophiuroids of Mexico

open access: yes, 2006
Here we present an up to date study on fossil ophiuroids from Mexico. The specimens come from the following States within the Mexican Republic: Baja California Sur, Chiapas, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Oaxaca and Puebla. The total number of specimens is 20 and one ophiuroid bed that bears many specimens.

The biomechanics Ophiuroid tube-feet

Nature, 2020
The radial water-vascular system of ophiuroids shows two kinds of hydraulic mechanism; one is concerned with the retraction and extension of the tube-feet, the other with their operation as effector-organs. At least in amphiurids, tube-feet are fully extended by pressure developed in the radial canal.

Ophiuroids feeding on Phytoplankton

Nature, 1960
RECENTLY, Nagabhushanam and Colman1 have described carrion-eating by some species of ophiuroids including Ophiocomina nigra (Abild.) and Ophiothrix fragilis (Abild.), from observations both in the laboratory and in the sea, a phenomenon which has been recorded previously2,3.

The fine structure of the sperm of a holothurian and an ophiuroid

Journal of Morphology, 1976
AbstractThe fine structure of the mature sperm of the holothurian, Cucumaria miniata, and the ophiuroid, Ophiopholis aculeata, is described with particular reference to their acrosomal and centriolar satellite complexes, and compared to the sperm of other echinoderms. In Cucumaria, the acrosome is in the form of a diffuse acrosomal vesicle.

A pycnogonid-ophiuroid association

Marine Biology, 1979
Three species of the ophiuroid genus Ophiocoma (O. doederleini de Loriol, O. pica Muller and Troschel and O. erinaceus Muller and Troschel) are host to the pycnogonid Anoplodactylus ophiurophilus Stock n.sp. on Aldabra atoll, Seychelles Islands. Infestation levels of the host ophiuroids from 3 localities differed markedly according to species, and lay ...

The giant neurone system in ophiuroids

Cell and Tissue Research, 1981
The radial nerve cords of members of the class Ophiuroidea consist of two parts, the ectoneural and the hyponeural tissues, which are separated by an acellular basal lamina. The hyponeural tissue is composed entirely of motor fibres. The cell bodies of the hyponeural neurones are arranged in ganglia, one to each segment of the arm, and each containing ...

Electrophysiology and Luminescence of An Ophiuroid Radial Nerve

Journal of Experimental Biology, 1977
ABSTRACT All-or-none single unit spikes were recorded from an ophiuroid radial nerve cord. The spikes propagate non-decrementally over the entire radial nerve cord (RNC) length at rates as rapid as 78 cm−1. The neurones responsible for single unit activity reach lengths of 4−6 cm. Therefore, interneural transmission must occur for single

Asteroids and Ophiuroids

1957
The asteroids (sea-stars) and ophiuroids (brittle stars) represent the two most successful divisions of the echinoderms of the present day. They both have retained the star-shaped body form, with no tendency toward the secondary bilateral symmetry found among the sea urchins and the holothurians.

Neurosecretion in the Ophiuroid Ophiopholis aculeata

Science, 1962
Neurocrine activity has been demonstrated for the first time in the Ophiuroidea and for only the second time in the phylum Echinodermata. Three types of neurosecretory cells have been shown, by means of histological staining techniques, to occur in the principal motor ganglia.

A new ciliary feeding structure in an ophiuroid echinoderm

Tissue and Cell, 1982
The genital shields which form the walls of the bursal slits in Ophiura texturata are covered by a precisely oriented arrangement of ciliated ridges and non-ciliated grooves. An electron microscopic examination has revealed many mucous cells associated with this structure and a catecholamine-containing nerve plexus underlying it.
