Ophthalmoplegia is usually chronic, and therefore diplopia is not a feature. There is enough time for the brain to suppress one image. It is amazing how much of impairment of eye movement has to occur before the patient becomes concerned or considers it as abnormal.

Hereditary Congenital External Ophthalmoplegia

Several members of a large pedigree suffering from hereditary congenital external ophthalmoplegia, an autosomal hereditary disorder of ocular movements, were examined and surgically treated. From nystagmographic findings it was concluded that the main cause of this disorder is of supranuclear origin.

Carbamazepine is a derivative of iminostilbene related to the tricyclic antidepressants.
