Structural analysis of an Asterias rubens peptide indicates the presence of a disulfide‐directed β‐hairpin fold

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 3, Page 415-426, March 2025.
Sea stars have remarkable regenerative capabilities. A peptide, KASH2, identified in the biofluid of the common sea star Asterias rubens appears to be involved with the wound‐healing response in the organism. Here, we show the 3D structure of KASH2 adopts a disulfide‐directed β‐hairpin fold, a fold only previously found in arachnids, and does not show ...

Flatworms have lost the right open reading frame kinase 3 gene during evolution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
All multicellular organisms studied to date have three right open reading frame kinase genes (designated riok-1, riok-2 and riok-3). Current evidence indicates that riok-1 and riok-2 have essential roles in ribosome biosynthesis, and that the riok-3 gene

A Spatially Explicit Model of the Dynamics of Opisthorchis viverrini Spread

open access: yesEcohydrology, Volume 18, Issue 2, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Opisthorchis viverrini is a water‐based disease‐causing parasite whose public health implications are relevant in Southeast Asia. Untreated or chronic infections often lead to severe hepatobiliary morbidity including cholangiocarcinoma, a lethal bile duct cancer. The liver fluke O.

An immunoregulatory amphipathic peptide derived from Fasciola hepatica helminth defense molecule (FhHDM‐1.C2) exhibits potent biotherapeutic activity in a murine model of multiple sclerosis

open access: yesThe FASEB Journal, Volume 39, Issue 4, 28 February 2025.
Using a combination of bioinformatics, sequence and structural analyses, we designed derivatives of the parasite‐derived helminth defense molecule to determine a relationship between the peptide structure and its immune regulatory function. Screening these derivatives in a series of assays related to the activation of inflammatory macrophages, we ...
