“The Emblem of North American Fraternity”: Opossums and Jim Crow Politics

open access: yesSouthern Spaces, 2022
Stephanie N. Bryan examines the cultural meanings behind opossum hunting and consumption in the US during Jim Crow apartheid—from freed people of African descent for whom these activities represented ecologically rooted foraging skills, economic ...

Morphology of Guard Hairs in Amazonian Marsupials: Intergeneric Variation, Habitat and Habit Association in a Phylogenetic Framework of the Order Didelphimorphia

open access: yesActa Zoologica, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The cuticle and medulla of guard hairs exhibit distinct morphological patterns among mammalian species. To investigate this variability in marsupials from the Brazilian Amazon, we analysed guard hairs from nine Didelphimorphia species and incorporated data from an additional 25 didelphid species.

First report of Strongyloides sp. (Nematoda, Strongyloididae) in Lutreolina crassicaudata (Didelphimorphia: Didelphidae)

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology
The present study reports the first case of the presence of the intestinal nematode Strongyloides sp. in fecal examinations of a male Lutreolina crassicaudata, considered a synanthropic marsupial species with zoonotic potential.

Making the most of RNA-seq: Pre-processing sequencing data with Opossum for reliable SNP variant detection [version 1; referees: 2 approved, 1 approved with reservations]

open access: yesWellcome Open Research, 2017
Identifying variants from RNA-seq (transcriptome sequencing) data is a cost-effective and versatile alternative to whole-genome sequencing. However, current variant callers do not generally behave well with RNA-seq data due to reads encompassing intronic

Results of the 2007-2008 Illinois Hunter Harvest Survey [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Grant/Contract No: W-112-R-17A random sample of 3,000 potential hunters was selected from among 2007 Illinois Habitat Stamp and hunting license purchasers. An 8-page questionnaire was successfully mailed to 2,906 of the 3,000 individuals. We received 1,

A Composite Genome Approach to Identify Phylogenetically Informative Data from Next-Generation Sequencing

open access: yes, 2014
We have developed a novel method to rapidly obtain homologous genomic data for phylogenetics directly from next-generation sequencing reads without the use of a reference genome.

Use of species’ responses to cryptic anthropogenic disturbances for monitoring biodiversity outcomes in tropical forests

open access: yesConservation Biology, EarlyView.
Abstract Measuring area‐based conservation outcomes in tropical forests is challenging due to cryptic human disturbances (e.g., hunting). As a result, comparative studies of management strategies providing quantitative outcomes remain scarce, especially in the Neotropics.

Temporally‐indexed multi‐species density impact functions: Quantifying timing and impact of invasive predators on seabird breeding success

open access: yesConservation Science and Practice, EarlyView.
Conserving threatened species often requires effective predator suppression strategies, particularly on islands where introduced predators pose significant threats. Density‐impact functions provide a framework to quantify the relationships between predator abundance and impact but are currently limited to a single species with invariant impact.

Genomic imprinting of IGF2 in marsupials is methylation dependent

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2008
Background- Parent-specific methylation of specific CpG residues is critical to imprinting in eutherian mammals, but its importance to imprinting in marsupials and, thus, the evolutionary origins of the imprinting mechanism have been the subject of ...
