Goal-driven opportunistic sensing

Proceedings of the 12th ACM international conference adjunct papers on Ubiquitous computing - Adjunct, 2010
Opportunistic activity and context recognition systems do not presume a static sensor infrastructure that is defined at the design time of a system. They also do not have a fixed recognition goal that has to be accomplished. These systems rather make best use of the available sensor systems according to a sensing mission whereas the topology of a ...

Crowd assisted approach for pervasive opportunistic sensing

2015 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communication Workshops (PerCom Workshops), 2015
The advances in the areas of microelectronics and telecommunications are helping to materialize the vision of a pervasive computing model through the incorporation of sensors and communication interfaces into objects of everyday life. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in crowd assisted sensing applications, in which people serve as the

Optimal Decision-Making in an Opportunistic Sensing Problem

IEEE Transactions on Cybernetics, 2016
In this paper, we consider the problem of sensing a finite set of (moving) objects over a finite planning horizon using a set of sensors in prefixed locations that vary with respect to time over a discretized space. Control in this situation is limited and the problem considered is one of opportunistic sensing.

Opportunistic sensing and detection of mild cognitive impairment

Proceedings of the 7th International Conference on PErvasive Technologies Related to Assistive Environments, 2014
Dementia is a growing healthcare problem, and it has become necessary to find a way to reduce the prevalence of this disease. Mild cognitive impairment is a risk factor for dementia, and being able to detect the onset of mild cognitive impairment gives healthcare professionals the chance to reduce the effect of dementia on the society.

Context sensing for autonomic forwarding in opportunistic networks

2012 IEEE 8th International Conference on Wireless and Mobile Computing, Networking and Communications (WiMob), 2012
Rank-based policies represent a promising approach for designing message forwarding algorithms that meet the needs of opportunistic networks. In fact, they combine low computation and communication costs with good performance in terms of both latency and delivery rates.

Constrained optimization for opportunistic distributed visual sensing

2013 American Control Conference, 2013
Distributed networks of dynamically controllable pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) cameras have high potential utility for tracking and high-res imaging of targets-of-interest maneuvering within a surveillance area. The actual utility that is achieved is determined by the real-time selection of the networked camera PTZ parameters to collaboratively achieve these ...

Energy Sensing Strategy Optimization for Opportunistic Spectrum Access

IEEE Communications Letters, 2012
This paper introduces a correlator-based energy sensing strategy for opportunistic spectrum access in a slow, flat-fading channel. The correlator provides weighted energy accumulation in time. We assume that the noise variance is known and the primary user (PU) traffic follows a two state Markov chain with known idle and busy rates.

Towards opportunistic sensed data dissemination in vehicular environments

2011 IEEE International Conference on Pervasive Computing and Communications Workshops (PERCOM Workshops), 2011
This paper proposes guidelines for the design of dissemination protocols for data sensed in vehicular environments in view of a number of potential applications. We organize the data dissemination process in three main tasks: discovery, assessment, and seizing of data exchange opportunities.

Opportunistic collaboration in participatory sensing environments

Proceedings of the fifth ACM international workshop on Mobility in the evolving internet architecture, 2010
The proliferation of networked mobile devices that can capture and communicate various kinds of data provides an opportunity to design novel man-machine sensing environments of which this paper considers participatory sensing. To achieve energy efficiency and reduce data redundancy, we propose Aquiba protocol that exploits opportunistic collaboration ...

Urban sensing systems

Proceedings of the 9th workshop on Mobile computing systems and applications, 2008
The development of sensing systems for urban deployments is still in its infancy. An interesting unresolved issue is the precise role assumed by people within such systems. This issue has significant implications as to where the complexity and the main challenges in building urban sensing systems will reside.
