Deficit, Exploitation, Beauty, Opportunity
Rhetoric of Health & MedicineThis dialogue examines rural health and healthcare by putting rhetoricians who study rural communities in direct conversation with healthcare professionals who practice in and advocate for rural communities. Thematic analysis of the dialogue revealed that conversations about healthcare in rural communities can simultaneously address what rural ...

Rethinking Prefetching in GPGPUs: Exploiting Unique Opportunities
2015 IEEE 17th International Conference on High Performance Computing and Communications, 2015 IEEE 7th International Symposium on Cyberspace Safety and Security, and 2015 IEEE 12th International Conference on Embedded Software and Systems, 2015In this paper we investigate static memory access predictability in GPGPU workloads, at the thread block granularity. We first show that a significant share of accessed memory addresses can be predicted using thread block identifiers. We build on this observation and introduce a hardware-software prefetching scheme to reduce average memory access time.

Microbial biosurfactants: challenges and opportunities for future exploitation
Trends in Biotechnology, 2012The drive for industrial sustainability has pushed biosurfactants to the top of the agenda of many companies. Biosurfactants offer the possibility of replacing chemical surfactants, produced from nonrenewable resources, with alternatives produced from cheap renewable feedstocks.

Cancer’s craving for sugar: an opportunity for clinical exploitation
Journal of Cancer Research and Clinical Oncology, 2009More than 80 years ago, Otto Warburg described the phenomenon whereby cancer cells avidly take up glucose and produce lactic acid under aerobic conditions, a process subsequently referred to as the Warburg effect or aerobic glycolysis. The exact molecular mechanisms underlying cancers reliance on glycolysis remains unclear, but is likely a combination ...

Pinpointing and Exploiting Opportunities for Enhancing Data Reuse
ISPASS 2008 - IEEE International Symposium on Performance Analysis of Systems and software, 2008The potential for improving the performance of data-intensive scientific programs by enhancing data reuse in cache is substantial because CPUs are significantly faster than memory. Traditional performance tools typically collect or simulate cache miss counts or rates and attribute them at the function level.

The opportunities for exploiting centrifugal fields
Heat Recovery Systems and CHP, 1993Abstract The use of centrifugal fields to enhance the performance of many unit operations, including separations, reactions and heat and mass transfer is potentially one of the most fruitful areas of process intensification. In this paper, the opportunities for exploiting centrifugal fields in the above areas ae discussed, and examples given of ...

Novel opportunities for the exploitation of host–microbiome interactions in the intestine
Current Opinion in Biotechnology, 2015New sequencing technologies have dramatically increased our knowledge on the composition of the human intestinal microbiota in health and disease. In parallel, various omics as well as focused molecular studies have revealed novel insights in host-microbiome interactions at the cellular and molecular level. Although these studies are mainly descriptive,

Cognitive Radios With Multiple Antennas Exploiting Spatial Opportunities
IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, 2010In this correspondence, the achievable rates of the so called “multiple-input multiple-output interference channel,” exploited by a couple of single antenna primary terminals and two antenna cognitive radios under specific interference constraints, are analyzed.

Exploring Space, Exploiting Opportunities
Journal of Industrial Ecology, 2014Summary Industrial ecology (IE) has recognized the relevance of space in various areas of the field. In particular, industrial symbiosis has argued for proximity and the colocation of firms to reduce emissions and costs from transport. But, space is also relevant for industrial ecosystems more widely.

Exploiting Signals-of-Opportunity for the Synchronization of Moving Sensors
2018 IEEE 19th International Workshop on Signal Processing Advances in Wireless Communications (SPAWC), 2018Positioning and communication systems rely on synchronization processes that are expensive in terms of time, energy and resources. A novel localization algorithm has been recently developed for the synchronization of static sensors [1]. This algorithm exploits time-delay measurements of signals-of-opportunity of static sources at unknown locations ...
