Abstract The optic disk oxygen tension has been measured polarographically in rhesus monkeys using a microelectrode. It was shown that the central retinal artery “leaks” oxygen and that there is a gradient in the surface oxygen tensions across the optic disk.

Reevaluation of the Optic Disk Vasculature
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1976The optic disk vessels of owl monkeys and humans were studied in whole mounts injected with silicone rubber and by serial sections of paraffin-embedded tissue. The capillary bed of the optic nerve head in continuous on one side with the retinal vessels and on the other side with the optic nerve behind the globe.

Congenital pigmentation of the optic disk is uncommon in the white race, whereas, according to Oguchi, 1 it is frequently found in the Japanese. Duke-Elder 2 stated that the pigment on the disk may migrate from the choroid and show itself as a fleck form pigmentation, or the entire disk may be diffusely and uniformly pigmented—black or slate colored.

Congenital Anomalies of the Optic Disk
American Journal of Ophthalmology, 1976Six patients had congenital anomalies of the optic disk: epipapillary fibrous tissue, peripapillary pigmentary disturbance, and anomalies in the size of the optic disk and in the retinal vessels. Congenital anomalies of the optic disk form a spectrum in which many of the ophthalmoscopic features are shared and in which visual function varies.
