Optical coherence tomography in optic pit maculopathy

Photocoagulation of Optic Disc Pits

2 cases of optic disc pits complicated by macular edema are reported. In both cases, fluorescein angiography showed dye leakage from the disc into the edematous retina and was helpful in planning treatment. Laser coagulation limited to the leaking area led to prompt resorption of the subretinal fluid and to substantial improvement of vision.

Double Optic Pit Maculopathy

The author reports a case of a 16-year-old boy with decreased vision secondary to optic pit maculopathy. Clinical examination revealed two distinct optic pits in the optic nerve head with macular schisis and no subretinal fluid. Follow-up examination at 1 year demonstrated stable macular schisis and vision.

Stereoscopic transparencies studied with magnification and projection suggest that the retinal elevation that communicates with optic pits is frequently a schisislike separation of the internal layers of retina. Thirteen of 15 eyes with optic pits and maculopathy fit the schisis pattern.
