Remnants of semiclassical bistability in the few-photon regime of cavity QED

open access: yes, 2011
Broadband homodyne detection of the light transmitted by a Fabry-Perot cavity containing a strongly-coupled $^{133}$Cs atom is used to probe the dynamic optical response in a regime where semiclassical theory predicts bistability but strong quantum ...

Bistability and All-Optical Memory in Dual-Mode Diode Lasers With Time-Delayed Optical Feedback

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2012
A proposal for an all-optical memory based on a bistability of single-mode states in a dual-mode diode laser with time-delayed optical feedback is presented.

Meta‐Rod Mechanical Metamaterials With Programmable Reconfiguration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Existing mechanical metamaterials achieve programmable large deformations in planar square or cubic configurations, restricted by required complex boundary conditions. This research proposes a 1D metamaterial, Meta‐rod, with linear, bending, twisting, area, and volume deformation modes.

BISTABLE OPTICAL SOLITONS

open access: yesLe Journal de Physique Colloques, 1988
We showed recently [1] that a single soliton solution of the highly-nonlinear Schrödinger equation becomes multi-stable for a certain class of nonlinearities. This implies that more than one amplitude profile and propagation constant of a single soliton may exist for the same total power carried by the soliton.

Study of optical bistability based on hybrid-cavity semiconductor lasers

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2019
All-optical flip-flop has been demonstrated experimentally based on our optical bistable hybrid square-rectangular lasers. In this paper, dual-mode rate equations are utilized for studying the optical bistability in the two-section hybrid-coupled ...

External Reflection From Two‐Photon Laser‐Printed Micromirrors Enables Photomechanical Actuation at a 90° Incident Angle

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Light reflectance increases along incidence angle and transmittance significantly drops around 90‐degree incidence angle. Here, we report two‐photon laser printed micro mirrors that redirect the skimming light beam into normal light absorption. Using this technique, light‐driven micro walkers and grippers are demonstrated by using grazing incidence ...

Optical bistability in nonlinear system with two loops of feedback

open access: yes, 2010
A model of nonlinear optical system surrounded by two loops of feedback is investigated. The cell with the vapor of rubidium - type atoms is taken in the capacity of nonlinear element. Two modes of near-resonant electromagnetic field interacting with the

Analysis of Hysteresis Width on Optical Bistability for the Realization of Optical SR Flip-Flop Using SMFP-LDs With Simultaneous Inverted and Non-Inverted Outputs

open access: yesIEEE Photonics Journal, 2014
The width of hysteresis in optical bistability plays an important role on latching operation. The injected input optical power and wavelength detuning in single mode Fabry-Perot laser diode (SMFP-LD) are two parameters that can impact the width of ...

Photon Avalanching Nanoparticles: The Next Generation of Upconverting Nanomaterials?

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This Perspective outlines the mechanistic foundations that enable photon‐avalanche (PA) behavior in lanthanide nanomaterials and contrasts them with emerging application spaces and forward‐looking design strategies. By bridging threshold engineering, energy‐transfer dynamics, and materials engineering, we provide a coherent roadmap for advancing the ...
