Photorefractive nonlinear optics and optical computing

Optical Engineering, 1989
This paper describes various nonlinear optical phenomena in photorefractive media and selected applications in optical computing. These phenomena include optical phase conjugation, two- and four-wave mixing, and real-time holography. The applications include image amplification and subtraction, logic and matrix operations, and optical interconnection.

Computer-simulated schlieren optics

Applied Optics, 1985
Computer-simulated schlieren pictures are used to interpret and quantitatively analyze schlieren pictures taken from a fast varying plasma with axial symmetry. Structurized angular distributions of deflected rays are obtained from a ray tracing simulation, the characteristics of which are related to density, density gradients, and dimensions of the ...

Computer Assisted Optical Surfacing

Applied Optics, 1972
Computer Assisted Optical Surfacing (CAOS) is a modern system for optical fabrication. A computer is used to calculate the effects of moving a lap on an optical surface. A mathematical deconvolution technique is used to specify lap motions to correct a surface error.

Integral optical digital computers

Applied Optics, 1990
The specific features of optical digital computers in integrated circuit form, whose principle of operation is based on electrooptic light modulation, are considered. The design of an array processor unit is described. It is shown that the optical communication channels introduced into integrated circuit structures with the help of thin film light ...

Optical computing: part 1

Applied Optics, 1986
The papers in the 15 May 1986 issue feature optical computing and include some of those given at the Lake Tahoe Topical Meeting an Optical Computing in Mar. 1985. They essentially focus on digital optical computers. A subsequent issue will contain papers on analog optical systems and the processing of binary encoded optical data.
