Classifying disc defects in optical disc drives by using time-series clustering
Proceedings of the 2004 American Control Conference, 2004Optical disc drives are subject to various disturbances and faults. A special type of fault is the so-called disc defect. In this paper we present an approach for disc defect classification. It is based on hierarchical clustering of measured signals that are affected by disc defects.

A Study on Flow Fields in an Optical Disc Drive
Transactions of the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers B, 2005The present study investigates flow characteristics in an optical disc drive (ODD). Detailed knowledge of the flow characteristics is essential to analyze flow-induced noise and vibration, forced convection and flow friction loss. The ODD used in a personal computer is used for the experiment and rotating velocity of disc is under the 4500 rpm.

Development of optical pickup for mini disc drives
Optical Review, 1994In order to miniaturize optical disc drives, it is important to miniaturize and thin the optical pickup. We have developed two new optical parts: the hologram laser and the actuator. By optimizing the hologram pattern of the hologram laser, optical path length is shortened. The frequency characteristics of the actuator have been stabilized by improving

Digital control in optical disc drives
ICCE. International Conference on Consumer Electronics (IEEE Cat. No.01CH37182), 2002This paper deals with digital control in read-only and recordable optical disc systems such as CD audio/video, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW and DVD-R/RW. Since 1993, the rapidly growing data storage device market has forced fast system upgrades and new systems for extremely low market prices.

Drive system and readout characteristics of Micro-Reflector optical disc
Optical Data Storage, 2007This paper reviews the analyses and the experimental results of Micro-reflector optical disc system. In Micro-reflector optical disc, data are recorded on multiple virtual planes in a monolithic holographic medium. We have demonstrated the possibility of huge capacity from our analyses of readout characteristics of the Micro-reflector.

A new methodology for optical sensing and identification using optical-disc drives
SPIE Proceedings, 2011Optical disc drives are inexpensive, readily available, and use highly sophisticated optoelectronic components which can be adapted for sensing. One limitation of using compact discs (CDs) and optical disk drives for sensing of analytes placed on a CD is the fluctuations in the voltage signal from the disk drive generated while reading the data on ...

Cooling Design for the Next Generation Optical Disc Drive
ASME 2007 InterPACK Conference, Volume 2, 2007Recently, the data transfer rate and the memory capacity of optical disc drives have been increasing dramatically. To obtain the high data transfer rate and greater memory capacity, the disc rotation speed and the laser power also need to be increased and these cause an increase in the temperature of the laser diode.

An advanced guide feeding system for optical disc drives
Microsystem Technologies, 2014The rotational speed of some optical disc drives (ODDs) has recently exceeded 15,000 rpm due to demand for high data-transfer rates. At these high speeds, the guide feeding system must maintain control over the optical pickup under hard acceleration and deceleration in random access operation for both read and write processes.

Performance of automatic ball balancers on optical disc drives
Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part C: Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 2002The balancing performance of an automatic ball balancer fitted on the spindle motor of optical disc drives, for instance CD-ROM or DVD drives, is analysed. It is well known that the operating speed of an optical disc drive with an automatic ball balancer should be higher than the translational natural frequency of the system to be balanced.

Optical disc drives — the breakthrough in data storage
Electronics and Power, 1983The application of video-disc-type technology to mass data storage promises a storage density at worst egual to that of the most advanced magnetic-based systems. This article provides an introduction to optical disc drives, highlighting a recent introduction from the ...
