Unveiling α‐MoO3 as a High‐Index, Low‐Loss Anisotropic Material: Bridging the Gap From Mid‐Infrared to Ultraviolet Nanophotonics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
α‐MoO3 is established as a high‐index, low‐loss anisotropic platform bridging mid‐infrared polaritonics and ultraviolet‐visible nanophotonics. Spectroscopic ellipsometry and calculations reveal refractive indices exceeding 3.9, with the largest in‐plane birefringence among transparent layered crystals at 425–500 nm, enabling zero‐order UV waveplates ...

Angstrom‐Scale Confined Ion Sieve and Accelerator for Efficient Aqueous Zinc Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
An angstrom‐scale confined ion accelerator strategy is proposed for ultra‐stable aqueous Zn anodes. Selective and precise transport of hydrated Zn(H2O)62+, Zn2+ cations, H2O molecules, and SO42− anions is achieved by in‐plane atomic Ti vacancies and angstrom‐scale interlayer free spacing within the Ti0.87O2 interfacial layer, leading to homogeneous Zn ...

Deterministic Nucleation of Nanocrystal Superlattices on 2D Perovskites for Light‐Funneling Heterostructures

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This work investigates the heterogeneous nucleation of CsPbBr3${\rm CsPbBr}_3$ nanocrystal superlattices along the faces of 2D PEA2PbBr4${\rm PEA}_2{\rm PbBr}_4$ layered perovskite microcrystals. Core–crown and core–shell heterostructure morphologies are obtained.

De Novo Autogenic Engineered Living Functional Materials

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A versatile platform for de novo autogenic engineered living materials is presented, leveraging protein mining, computational modeling, and synthetic biology. By reprogramming the Escherichia coli curli machinery with β‐solenoid proteins from non‐model bacteria, macroscopic biomaterials with enhanced mechanical properties, UV‐C irradiation protection ...

High‐Performance Bio‐Glue From the Berries of a Parasitic Plant

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We report a fully bio‐based adhesive derived primarily from a (poly)saccharide extract obtained from the berries of the hemi‐parasitic plant mistletoe (Viscum album), supplemented with tannic and malic acid without any further chemical functionalization.

1‐D Collocated Dual‐Gradient Sensory Fibers for Comprehensive Sensing and Decoding of Complex Human Motion and Physiology

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Coupled materials design enables a monolithic fiber that integrates complementary sensing regimes into a single wearable strand. By preserving informative signal features across subtle physiological deformation, large body motion, and mixed mechanical inputs, the dual‐gradient architecture generates synchronized, less redundant outputs that improve ...

Intrinsically Stretchable Piezoelectric Nanocomposites for Artificial Ultrasonic Sensory Synapse

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Applying ultrasonic stimulations to a soft‐stretchable underwater piezoelectric sensor based on the soft‐stretchable nanocomposite from the thermal cross‐linking between the ─C─F group of P(VDF‐TrFE) and the ─NH2 group of (PEG‐diamine) with incorporating amine‐terminated BTO@APTES nanofillers on the soft PDMS substrates generated high piezoelectric ...

Optical fibre plethysmograph

Journal of Biomedical Engineering, 1985
We describe a method for obtaining blood volume information from the external jugular vein or carotid artery by means of an optical fibre transducer. The device may be used to obtain accurate predictions of the state of the cardiac cycle, thereby enabling a range of physiological measurements to be made.

Fibre‐optical microendoscopy

Journal of Microscopy, 2014
SummaryMicroendoscopy has been an essential tool in exploring micro/nano mechanisms in vivo due to high‐quality imaging performance, compact size and flexible movement. The investigations into optical fibres, micro‐scanners and miniature lens have boosted efficiencies of remote light delivery to sample site and signal collection.

Fibre-Optic Transillumination: FOTI

2019
Transillumination of teeth has been advocated for caries detection for over 100 years and requires minimal experience to implement in clinical practice. Fibre-optic light sources are readily available and when used appropriately, help to enhance the contrast between sound tooth tissue and caries lesions.
