Stable Optical Trapping Based on Optical Binding Forces

Physical Review Letters, 2006
Various trapping configurations have been realized so far, either based on the scattering force or the gradient force. In this Letter, we propose a new trapping regime based on the equilibrium between a scattering force and optical binding forces only.

Optically induced 'negative forces'

Nature Photonics, 2012
Attracting objects with optical beams may seem like science fiction, but various schemes already do this, albeit with some caveats and limitations. The most recent progress in this emerging field is reviewed, with particular emphasis on manipulation of small objects by optically induced 'negative forces'.

Optical pressure and numerical simulation of optical forces

Applied Optics, 2017
Optical forces on a particle can be calculated using numerical methods and by integrating the Maxwell stress tensor over the surface of the particle. It is shown that this gives considerable numerical noise for the radiation force on particles with refractive index close to that of the surrounding medium and that a large number of mesh elements are ...

Optics and intermolecular forces

Molecular Physics, 1986
The influence of long-range intermolecular forces upon the refractive index and optical rotation of molecular fluids is examined using quantum electrodynamics and many-body theory. An expression for this effect, analogous to the McLachlan formula for the dispersion energy, and involving the molecular polarizability and second hyperpolarizability, is ...

Spontaneous Force Optical Traps

1993
Abstract : Extensive studies were carried out on the use of laser light to cool and trap neutral cesium atoms. High density samples were obtained of trapped cesium with temperatures as low as 0.3 mK, and the interactions between these atoms studied.

Optical forces in metamaterials

2011
Since a few years, it has been proposed to harness optical forces, i.e., the forces that arise when linear momentum is transferred from photons to matter, in micro- and nanophotonic systems. Most attention was focused on optical forces in waveguides, where resonant waveguide modes enable forces on the space scale of the wavelength of light.
