Limiting performance in carbon suspension optical limiters
LEOS '95. IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society 1995 Annual Meeting. 8th Annual Meeting. Conference Proceedings, 2002Summary form only given. Carbon suspension optical limiters have remarkably low activation thresholds and a large dynamic range. We have recently performed an experiment to measure the scattered light as a function of angle and time for various input energies, and an experiment to measure the limiting as a function of laser wavelength.

Variable attenuation optical limiters
ILSC '92: Proceedings of the International Laser Safety Conference, 1992The proliferation of high power, pulsed laser systems necessitates the development of a passive response, large dynamic range device to protect personnel from purposeful or inadvertent ocular damage. To safeguard these personnel, i.e., maintain safety eyewear transmission below the Maximum Permissible Exposure (MPE), the eyewear must cover a large ...

Theoretical Limits for the Dispersion Limited Optical Channel
2006In this paper, we study the theoretical limits of optical communication channels affected by chromatic dispersion. By using as a metric the energy transfer ratio, we find the optimal transmitted pulse shape that allows minimizing the impact of dispersion, together with an interesting definition of the dispersive channel equivalent bandwidth. This paper,

The performance requirements of optical lithography equipment are driven by DRAM memory chips which require a 30% reduction in line width and a three-fold increase in resolution elements every generation. Until now semiconductor chips were small enough that arrays of them could be placed in the field of a lithography lens.

Optical vortex density limitation
Optics Communications, 2003Some of the potential applications of optical vortices may require a certain density of topological charges within a given area. However, topological charge densities cannot extend over areas of arbitrary size. It is shown here that the net topological charge in an area cannot exceed the circumference of that area divided by the wavelength.

A review is given of the characteristics and limits of integrated optics devices and circuits, with emphasis on size, speed, and power consumption. Performance limits and trade offs are discussed for semiconductor lasers, filters, switches and modulators, and bistable devices.

For a perfect optical system as sketched in fig. 1 (which also defines the notations) the minimum distance of resolved bubbles can be written, according to the Rayleigh criterion, $$R = \frac{{1.22\lambda p}}{a} = 1.22\lambda (m + 1)(f/a)$$ (1) (λ being the wavelength of the light, we shall assume λ = 0.55 µm).

Optical limiting materials. Methanofullerenes, fulleroids and/or other fullerenes chemically altered for enhanced solubility, in liquid solution, and in solid blends with transparent glass (SiO2) gels or polymers, or semiconducting conjugated) polymers, are shown to be useful as optical limiters (optical surge protectors).
