The LISA experiment has six telescopes, in three spacecrafts, in separate orbits about the sun. There is a continuous laser link between all the spacecrafts. The use of standard optical design and analysis of computer codes is not possible because of the large, 5 million km, distances between the spacecrafts, the fact that the spacecrafts are in ...

A. M. Lane, of the Atomic Energy Research Establishment, Harwell, England, opened his remarks to the International Conference on the Nuclear Optical Model by quoting a US Navy man who was arranging Dr. Lane's MATS transportation to the conference. “What”, asked the sailor, “is the Navy doing transporting Limey opticians to the States?”

Modeling Optical Scintillation
2009An optical wave propagating through the atmosphere will experience irradiance (intensity) fluctuations, or scintillation, even over relatively short propagation paths. Scintillation is caused almost exclusively by small temperature variations in the atmosphere, resulting in index of refraction fluctuations (i.e., optical turbulence).

This paper reviews about 22 contributions loosely classified under the heading optical model studies. The optical mode has nowadays become a kind of technical tool to be used in other calculations. Some of the reviewed contributions, therefore, have only this tiny connection with optical model studies (which, of course, does not reduce their scientific
