Virtual optical network embedding in multi-domain optical networks
2014 IEEE Global Communications Conference, 2014We consider the problem of efficient virtual optical network (VON) mapping in a multi-domain optical network (VON-MD) with the objective of minimizing total network link cost for a given VON demand that is embedded over the multi-domain optical network.

Distributed network control for optical networks
IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, 1997This paper describes an architecture for controlling a wavelength-routed optical network. The optical network provides reconfigurable connections that can be used to carry different types of data, at possibly different bit rates. A connection consists of a path in the network and a wavelength on each link in that path.

Remote network management for optical networks
Bell Labs Technical Journal, 2006Remote network management of optical networks has evolved from very limited operational capabilities to current operations where most functions can be accomplished remotely. Advances have also allowed a lower operational cost and near 100% reliability service levels.

An optical switch, an optical network node and an optical network
2015There is provided an optical switch. The optical switch comprises a first optical waveguide (10), a second optical waveguide (20), a first optical ring resonator (40) and a second optical ring resonator (50). The first optical ring resonator (40) is arranged between the first optical waveguide (10) and the second optical waveguide (20), wherein the ...

Optical networks—the electro-optic reality
Optical Switching and Networking, 2005A general overview of the current status and future trends in optical networking is given. Special attention is given to the coexistence of optical and electronic technologies in telecommunications networks. After reviewing the advantages of both technologies, their use in different network areas is discussed.

Optical amplifiers for optical networks
1997 Digest of the IEEE/LEOS Summer Topical Meeting: Vertical-Cavity Lasers/Technologies for a Global Information Infrastructure/WDM Components Technology/Advanced Semiconductor Lasers and Applications/Gallium Nitride Materials, Processing, and Devices (C, 2002The erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is a key enabler of WDM transmission systems and wavelength routed optical networks. EDFAs are well suited to compensate the optical loss of network elements and transmission spans. Although the EDFA's are almost ideal in their characteristics, they are not quite perfect.
