Techniques for optical packet switching and optical burst switching
IEEE Communications Magazine, 2001Wavelength-division multiplexing appears to be the solution of choice for providing a faster networking infrastructure that can meet the explosive growth of the Internet. Several different technologies have been developed so far for the transfer of data over WDM.

Optical packet switching: A reality check
Optical Switching and Networking, 2008This paper presents an analysis of the energy consumption in a number of optical switch fabric architectures for optical packet-switched applications and compares them to electronic switch fabrics. Optical packet switching does not appear to offer any substantial power consumption advantages over electronic packet switching.

The 17th Annual Meeting of the IEEELasers and Electro-Optics Society, 2004. LEOS 2004., 2004
In this talk we will describe the motivation, background and state-of-the-art in optical packet switching architectures, the underlying technology and challenges. Recent optical packet switching demonstration at data rates from 2.5 Gbps to 160 Gbps will be described.

Packet-switched optical networks
IEEE Micro, 1998We describe a testbed to study both the theoretical aspects and physical implementation issues associated with high-bit-rate, multihop, packet-switched OTDM networks. We have found that using optical time-division-multiplexed (OTDM) techniques can greatly increase the bandwidth of a single-wavelength channel.

The concept of optical packet switching (OPS) is emerging as an alternative to coarser-grained switching in the optical domain. Despite the significant technological challenges it faces, OPS holds the promise of a highly reconfigurable, bandwidth-efficient, and flexible optical layer. In this chapter we study some of the architectural and design issues

Design of optical packet switching networks
Global Telecommunications Conference, 2002. GLOBECOM '02. IEEE, 2003The paper considers optical packet switching networks with slotted operation. A general model of network nodes is introduced, based upon a nonblocking switching fabric, and re-circulating fiber delay lines to solve contentions. Given the current large bandwidth availability in optical networks, and the projected limitations of electronic switches, a ...
