Microstructure Reconstruction in Battery Electrodes Using Machine Learning Based on Low‐Voltage Focused Ion Beam–Scanning Electron Microscopy Tomography Images

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Low‐voltage FIB‐SEM tomography combined with a image preprocessing pipeline improves phase contrast and enables reliable machine‐learning segmentation of conductive networks in lithium‐ion battery electrodes. Structural descriptors are extracted from segmented images, done semimanually and automated, and compared.

Implantable silicon neural probes with nanophotonic phased arrays for single-lobe beam steering

open access: yesCommunications Engineering
In brain activity mapping with optogenetics, patterned illumination is crucial for targeted neural stimulation. However, due to optical scattering in brain tissue, light-emitting implants are needed to bring patterned illumination to deep brain regions ...

A phased antenna array for surface plasmons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Surface plasmon polaritons are electromagnetic waves that propagate tightly bound to metal surfaces. The concentration of the electromagnetic field at the surface as well as the short wavelength of surface plasmons enable sensitive detection methods and ...

From Shear to Sound: Mechanics–Acoustics Mapping of TPMS Lattices

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Triply periodic minimal surface (TPMS) lattices are mapped across mechanical and acoustic performance, revealing that descriptors validated in compression fail under shear. First‐time comparison with trusses included. A transition from porous to resonance‐driven absorption emerges at 25% density.

N × N optical phased array with 2N phase shifters

open access: yesOptics Express, 2019
Two-dimensional (2-D) integrated optical phased arrays (OPA) have many applications from optical imaging to LiDAR. Conventionally, 2-D beam-steering in an N × N OPA requires N2 phase shifters placed within the phased array aperture, resulting in a high per-element power consumption while limiting the minimum achievable element-to-element spacing.

High-Directionality Silicon Nitride Antenna Based on Distributed Bragg Reflector for Optical Phased Array

open access: yes, 2023
Optical phased arrays (OPAs) have great potential in the fields of integrated solid-state light detection and ranging. The ranging distance of an OPA can be further enlarged by improving the directionality of the grating antenna.
