Relationship between axial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio in optical coherence tomography [PDF]
In optical coherence tomography (OCT), axial resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) are typically viewed as uncoupled parameters. We show that this is true only for mirror-like surfaces and that in diffuse scattering samples such as biological tissues there is an inherent coupling between axial resolution and measurement SNR.

Estimation Uncertainties in the Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio Network Optimization [PDF]
In this work, we investigate the effects of estimation uncertainties in the optimization of the optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) at the wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks.

Computational signal-to-noise ratio analysis for optical quadrature microscopy
Optical quadrature microscopy (OQM) was invented in 1997 to reconstruct a full-field image of quantitative phase, and has been used to count the number of cells in live mouse embryos. Here we present a thorough SNR analysis that incorporates noise terms for fluctuations in the laser, aberrations within the individual paths of the Mach-Zehnder ...

Signal-to-Noise Ratio of Brillouin Grating Measurement with Micrometer-Resolution Optical Low Coherence Reflectometry [PDF]
Signal-dependent speckle-like noise was the dominant noise in a Brillouin grating measurement with micrometer-resolution optical low coherence reflectometry (OLCR).

Analysis of the signal-to-noise ratio in the optical differentiation wavefront sensor
High resolution wavefront sensors are devices with a great practical interest since they are becoming a key part in an increasing number of applications like extreme Adaptive Optics. We describe the optical differentiation wavefront sensor, consisting of an amplitude mask placed at the intermediate focal plane of a 4-f setup.

Versatile Full-Field Optical Coherence Tomography with Adjustable Transmission-to-Reflection Ratio and Enhanced Signal-to-Noise Ratio [PDF]
Traditional full-field optical coherence tomography (FF-OCT) is effective for rapid cross-sectional imaging but often suffers from incoherent signals due to imbalanced light intensities between the sample and reference arms. While the high-throughput dark-field (HTDF) FF-OCT technique employs an asymmetric beamsplitter (BS) to achieve an asymmetric ...

In-Band Estimation of Optical Signal-to-Noise Ratio From Equalized Signals in Digital Coherent Receivers [PDF]
We propose a novel method of in-band estimation of optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) using a digital coherent receiver, where OSNR is determined from second- and fourth-order statistical moments of equalized signals in any modulation format.

Amplification and phase noise transfer of a Kerr microresonator soliton comb for low phase noise THz generation with a high signal-to-noise ratio [PDF]
Optical injection locking is implemented to faithfully transfer the phase noise of a dissipative Kerr microresonator soliton comb in addition to the amplification of the Kerr comb. Unlike Er-doped fiber and semiconductor optical amplifiers, the optical injection locking amplifies the comb mode without degrading the optical signal-to-noise ratio.
