New Abundance Determinations of Cadmium, Lutetium, and Osmium in the r-process Enriched Star BD+173248

open access: yes, 2010
We report the detection of Cd I (Z = 48), Lu II (Z = 71), and Os II (Z = 76) in the metal-poor star BD+173248. These abundances are derived from an ultraviolet spectrum obtained with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the Hubble Space Telescope.

Theory of electromagnon in the multiferroic Mn perovskites: Vital role of higher harmonic components of the spiral spin order

open access: yes, 2010
We study theoretically the electromagnon and its optical spectrum (OS) of the terahertz-frequency regime in the magnetic-spiral-induced multiferroic phases of the rare-earth (R) Mn perovskites, RMnO3, taking into account the elliptical deformation or the

Starbursts and black hole masses in X-shaped radio galaxies: Signatures of a merger event?

open access: yes, 2012
We present new spectroscopic identifications of 12 X-shaped radio galaxies and use the spectral data to derive starburst histories and masses of the nuclear supermassive black holes in these galaxies.

Radiation and Polarization Signatures of 3D Multi-zone Time-dependent Hadronic Blazar Model

open access: yes, 2016
We present a newly developed time-dependent three-dimensional multi-zone hadronic blazar emission model. By coupling a Fokker-Planck based lepto-hadronic particle evolution code 3DHad with a polarization-dependent radiation transfer code, 3DPol, we are ...

High Fidelity Full-Color Optical Sectioning Structured Illumination Microscopy by Fourier Domain Based Reconstruction

open access: yesPhotonics
The natural color of biological specimens plays a crucial role in body protection, signaling, physiological adaptations, etc. Full-color optical sectioning structured illumination microscopy (OS-SIM) color is a promising approach that can reconstruct ...

Modeling of the Super-Eddington Phase for Classical Novae: Five IUE Novae

open access: yes, 2006
We present a light curve model for the super-Eddington luminosity phase of five classical novae observed with IUE. Optical and UV light curves are calculated based on the optically thick wind theory with a reduced effective opacity for a porous ...

P‐glycoprotein modulates the fluidity gradient of the plasma membrane of multidrug resistant CHO cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
To explore the impact of the overexpression of the multidrug‐transporter P‐glycoprotein (ABCB1) on membrane fluidity, we compared the transversal gradient of mobility and microviscosity in plasma membranes of drug‐sensitive Chinese hamster ovary cells (AuxB1) and their multidrug‐resistant derivatives (B30) using the fluorescent n‐(9‐anthroyloxy) fatty ...

Nanoantenna-enhanced ultrafast nonlinear spectroscopy of a single gold nanoparticle [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Optical nanoantennas are a novel tool to investigate previously unattainable dimensions in the nanocosmos. Just like their radio-frequency equivalents, nanoantennas enhance the light-matter interaction in their feed gap.

Disruption of SETD3‐mediated histidine‐73 methylation by the BWCFF‐associated β‐actin G74S mutation

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The β‐actin G74S mutation causes altered interaction of actin with SETD3, reducing histidine‐73 methylation efficiency and forming two distinct actin variants. The variable ratio of these variants across cell types and developmental stages contributes to tissue‐specific phenotypical changes. This imbalance may impair actin dynamics and mechanosensitive

Vision System for the Mars Sample Return Capture Containment and Return System (CCRS)

open access: yesAerospace
The successful 2020 launch and 2021 landing of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Perseverance Mars rover initiated the first phase of the NASA and European Space Agency (ESA) Mars Sample Return (MSR) campaign. The goal of the MSR
