We experimentally demonstrate an ultra-compact all-optical switch involving Fano resonance based on a side-coupled Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonator and a silicon photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavity, with an area of only 11 μm2. By optimizing the structure

Compact optical crossbar switch
Applied Optics, 1997A novel compact holographic crossbar architecture based on planar optics is presented. It consists of a pair of identical planar holographic elements, a two-dimensional array (N x N) transmission mask, a one-dimensional array (N) of input light sources, and a one-dimensional array (N) of detectors.

Optical Buffering and Switching for Optical Packet Switching
2006 International Conference on Photonics in Switching, 2006We describe the design and initial results of an all-optical buffered 40 Gb/s packet switch. Dynamic packet forwarding is illustrated and specific attention is directed to buffering. We assess the challenges in meeting the requirements for optical buffering devices. Slow light and delay line buffering approaches are described and several recent results

Micromotor grating optical switch
Optics Letters, 1995We describe polysilicon micromotors with diffraction gratings fabricated on the polished surface of the polysilicon rotor for optical switching applications. The motors have rotor diameters of 0.5–2 mm with grating elements having periods of 1.80 and 3.86 μm. These microswitches have rise times of 300 μs and settling times of 500 μs when driven by a 65-

Optical Switching in Chiropticenes
Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2003Abstract: Chiropticenes™ are a novel class of predesigned chiral molecular switches that are triggered and controlled by a combination of both light and electric field. Chiropticenes contain an optically active (chiral) center and, as a consequence, provide two accessible equal energy bistable states resembling the molecular elements of binary logic ...

An acousto-optic architecture is presented to implement a nonblocking space-division switch with O(N) complexity. Signal degradation is minimal so that the switch is suitable for nonregenerative application within optical networks; it is also capable of rapid reconfiguration. Experiments for a 1 x 4 switch show an insertion loss ranging from 4.6 to 5.6

Optical waveguide switch (3 × 3) for an optical switching system
Applied Optics, 1978A new optical switch element is proposed for a switching system which exchanges optical signals in optical transmission lines without optoelectric conversion. It consists of three parallel equidistant straight singlemode waveguides fabricated of an electrooptic material with electrodes deposited on them. The element, whose interaction length is pi/(2)((

It is shown theoretically that the nonlinear optical Kerr effect can be used to build an all optical configuration controlling spectral switches. The main advantage in it is that it can greatly simplify the control method compared to previous schemes using the aperture mechanism or electro-optical one.

Techniques for optical packet switching and optical burst switching
IEEE Communications Magazine, 2001Wavelength-division multiplexing appears to be the solution of choice for providing a faster networking infrastructure that can meet the explosive growth of the Internet. Several different technologies have been developed so far for the transfer of data over WDM.
