Optical Interconnect Switch

MRS Proceedings, 1989
AbstractA novel photonic interconnect architecture is proposed which can provide extremely high dimensionality. The proposed architecture, which resembles a collapsed network, avoids the difficulties associated with the use of optical crosspoints. This is accomplished by providing a dedicated path for all input- and output-port connections on a common ...

Optical Packet Switching

2009
This chapter provides an outline of the main concepts and issues related to optical packet switching (OPS). The basic network functions required by this paradigm are discussed and references to past and current research on the topic are provided. Optical packet switching is a transport technique that assumes information to be organized in packets ...

MEMS for Optical Switching

Integrated Photonics Research, 1999
As the transmission capacity of WDM networks increases apace with rapidly growing demand, optical switching has attracted strong interest, due chiefly to the fact that its complexity is impervious to steadily rising per-channel bit rate, and its interfaces are inherently simple and inexpensive.

Acousto-optic photonic switch

Optics News, 1989
An acousto-optic architecture is presented to implement a nonblocking space-division switch with O(N) complexity. Signal degradation is minimal so that the switch is suitable for nonregenerative application within optical networks; it is also capable of rapid reconfiguration. Experiments for a 1 x 4 switch show an insertion loss ranging from 4.6 to 5.6

Optical waveguide switch (3 × 3) for an optical switching system

Applied Optics, 1978
A new optical switch element is proposed for a switching system which exchanges optical signals in optical transmission lines without optoelectric conversion. It consists of three parallel equidistant straight singlemode waveguides fabricated of an electrooptic material with electrodes deposited on them. The element, whose interaction length is pi/(2)((

Packet switching or optical switching?

IEEE Internet Computing, 2000
One of history's main benefits is that it lets us detect trends that help predict the future. Over the past 30 years since the Internet started (1970-2000), many clear trends have emerged. The article very briefly examines the most critical of these trends, the one that led to the creation of the Internet: the packet switching cost trend.

Digital optical switch

Applied Physics Letters, 1987
We propose and demonstrate a novel polarization- and wavelength-independent digital electro-optic switch in Ti:LiNbO3. This four-port integrated optics switch is characterized by a steplike response to the applied voltage. Switching is achieved through adiabatic eigenmode transformation in an asymmetric waveguide junction.

Spiropyrans as molecular optical switches

Photochemical & Photobiological Sciences, 2010
Optical microscopes use visible light and an arrangement of lenses to provide us with magnified images of small samples. Combined with efficient fluorescent probes and highly sensitive fluorescence detection techniques they allow the non-invasive 3D study of subcellular structures even in living cells or tissue. However, optical microscopes are subject

Optical Switching Technologies and Switching in Optical Future Networks

2006 International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, 2006
Compared with the large range of optical switching technologies that have been the subject of research, very few have been deployed on a significant scale in telecommunications networks. From an industrial and commercial viewpoint, this paper describes the current status of the more successful ones and relates them to their network applications and to ...

Optical switching technologies for fast optical packet switching

Proceedings of 2002 4th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (IEEE Cat. No.02EX551), 2003
A survey of optical switching technologies being candidates for an optical packet switched (OPS) network is presented. Switching time range for optical switching fabrics is found through analysis. In light of this, and based on reported switch devices, switching technologies are identified as candidates for OPS.
