Controlling optical turbulence
Physical Review A, 1997A robust global control strategy, implemented as a spatial filter with delayed feedback, is shown to stabilize and steer the weakly turbulent output of a spatially extended system. The latter is described by a generalized complex Swift-Hohenberg equation [J. Lega, J. V. Moloney, and A. C. Newell, Phys. Rev. Lett.

Turbulence near hot surfaces such as desert terrains and roads during the summer, causes shimmering, distortion and blurring in images. While recent works have focused on image restoration, this paper explores what information about the scene can be extracted from the distortion caused by turbulence.

Nonlinear Optics: Materials, Fundamentals and Applications, 2007
We consider an all-optical bump-on-tail instability. For weak nonlinearity, there is momentum transfer with no variation in intensity. Above a threshold, modulations appear. Borrowing plasma language, these represent weak and strong regimes of optical turbulence.

Optical Eigenmodes in Atmospheric Turbulence
OSA Imaging and Applied Optics Congress 2021 (3D, COSI, DH, ISA, pcAOP), 2021We study optical eigenmodes in a turbulent atmosphere. From the eigenvalue statistics we identify highly transmitting eigenmodes. Furthermore, we investigate the spatial structure and stability of these modes for a broad range of turbulence conditions.

Fiber-optic atmospheric turbulence sensor
Optics Letters, 1995A novel dual-air-gap fiber-optic Mach - Zehnder interferometer is proposed for the direct measurement of the atmospheric optical turbulence structure constant C(n)(2). The shot-noise-limited minimum detectable structure constant is estimated to be 4.5 x 10(-20) m(-2/3), which is more than 2 orders of magnitude below a typical value of 10(-17) m(-2/3 ...

We consider the suppression of the so-called "turbulent regimes" in optical systems with advection. It is well known that spatiotemporal systems submitted to advection can undergo a convective instability above a critical value of the drift parameter.

Optical properties of turbulent channel flow
Applied Optics, 1990We have measured the scaling behavior of the turbulent scattering of a beam transmitted through a heated channel flow and conclude that the use of He in a properly engineered channel allows for efficient operation of gas cooled disk amplifiers at average power.
