Optical Waveguide Refractometers

2005
In this chapter we have illustrated a new method for the determination of the refractive index of liquid samples, based on Cerenkov second harmonic generation from suitable planar waveguides. The method allows the determination of the refractive index in the near infrared by detection in the visible.

Optical waveguide theory

2004
In this chapter, after presenting a brief review of the various types of optical waveguides, we outline the key principles and parameters which describe and define the operation of optical waveguides and fibres. The ways in which propagation through optical fibres affects the properties of the guided waves are discussed, including dispersion and non ...

A novel optical waveguide for integrated optics

IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1973
A novel dielectric optical waveguide was made consisting of a guide pattern on a thin dielectric film. Almost all the power propagates in the thin film along the guide pattern. The existence of propagation modes of this waveguide was verified both theoretically and experimentally.

Optical-waveguide hybrid coupler

Optics Letters, 1982
As a novel guided-wave passive device, the optical-waveguide hybrid coupler is proposed and its first known demonstration is reported. The proposed device consists of symmetric and nonsymmetric branching forks connected at a junction. An explanation of the working mechanism is presented.

Efficient optical waveguide coupler

Applied Optics, 1980
A new method for high-efficiency interconnection of two planar optical waveguides is described. This technique is based on mode-matched coupling and is particularly useful when the difference between the refractive indices of the individual guides is large.

Optical waveguide cable connection

Applied Optics, 1976
The requirements for a practical optical waveguide cable connector are reviewed. The sources of loss in fiber-to-fiber coupling, both intrinsic (fiber-related) and extrinsic (connector-related), are discussed and quantified. A multiple channel, single-fiber-per-channel connector concept, termed the overlap connector, is then described, with emphasis on

Single-mode optical waveguides

Applied Optics, 1979
An efficient and powerful technique has been developed to treat the problem of wave propagation along arbitrarily shaped single-mode dielectric waveguides with inhomogeneous index variations in the cross-sectional plane. This technique is based on a modified finite-element method.

Benzocyclobutene optical waveguides

IEEE Photonics Technology Letters, 1995
Single-mode optical waveguides at 1300 nm have been fabricated from the organic polymer benzocyclobutene. This material system utilizes a 535 rmb photodefinable resin for forming the core of the waveguide, allowing the waveguides to be processed in a fashion similar to a negative photoresist.

Optically pumped waveguide lasers

Journal of the Optical Society of America, 1976
The optically pumped waveguide gas lasers in the submillimeter and millimeter wave regions are simple, compact, rugged, efficient, practical, coherent sources. A number of new laser lines have been observed in these lasers. General considerations are given on the attenuation constants of waveguides and the rate equation models. Characteristics of these
