Summary The challenges for introducing optical waveguides into the high performance computer packaging environment are formidable. Polymers may be well suited for meeting this challenge. In this work, progress was shown using an epoxy material vT hich has been fabricated into ridge waveguides which exhibit low propagation loss (0.3 dB/cm at 1.3 jum ...

A novel optical waveguide for integrated optics
IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 1973A novel dielectric optical waveguide was made consisting of a guide pattern on a thin dielectric film. Almost all the power propagates in the thin film along the guide pattern. The existence of propagation modes of this waveguide was verified both theoretically and experimentally.

Optical Waveguide Refractometers
2005In this chapter we have illustrated a new method for the determination of the refractive index of liquid samples, based on Cerenkov second harmonic generation from suitable planar waveguides. The method allows the determination of the refractive index in the near infrared by detection in the visible.

Nonorthogonal Optical Waveguides and Resonators
Bell System Technical Journal, 1970The modes of propagation in optical systems which do not possess meridional planes of symmetry (nonorthogonal systems) are investigated in the case where the effect of apertures and losses can be neglected. The fundamental mode of propagation is obtained with the help of a complex ray pencil concept.
