Topological Filters for Solitons in Coupled Waveguides Networks

open access: yes, 2005
We study the propagation of discrete solitons on chains of coupled optical waveguides where finite networks of waveguides are inserted at some points.

Fundamental limitations to gain enhancement in periodic media and waveguides [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
A common strategy to compensate for losses in optical nanostructures is to add gain material in the system. By exploiting slow-light effects it is expected that the gain may be enhanced beyond its bulk value.

Optical Waveguide Enhanced Photovoltaics

open access: yesOptics Express, 2008
Enhanced light to electric power conversion efficiency of photovoltaic cells with a low absorbance was achieved using waveguide integration. We present a proof of concept using a very thin dye-sensitized solar cell which absorbed only a small fraction of the light at normal incidence.

Role of the Recombination Zone in Organic Light‐Emitting Devices

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This review summarizes the critical role of the recombination zone in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). We highlight that broadening the recombination zone in OLEDs based on emissive layers with balanced charge transport and high photoluminescence quantum yields provides a promising route toward achieving both long operational lifetime and high ...

Generation of phonons from electrostriction in small-core optical waveguides

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2013
We investigate the generation of acoustic phonons from electrostriction of optical waves in small core waveguides. We specifically consider simple step-index strip waveguides composed of silica or silicon in air, with sub-micron lateral dimensions.

Multimode waveguides of Photodefinable epoxy for optical backplane applications [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
We developed photodefined, multimode-fiber compatible waveguides based on epoxies. These waveguides will be embedded in backplane PCB’s for optical interconnect applications using 850 nm VCSELs as light sources.

Localized Temperature Monitoring in Mouse Brain during Light Delivery via a Non‐Planar Tapered Fiber‐Integrated µRTD Sensor

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We report a multifunctional tapered optical fiber integrating a conformal micro‐resistance temperature detector (µRTD) for local, real‐time thermometry during optical stimulation. The platform combines light‐delivery and temperature sensing within a minimally invasive footprint, enabling detection of sub‐degree cortical heating under representative ...

Nonlinear self-flipping of polarization states in asymmetric waveguides

open access: yes, 2012
Waveguides of subwavelength dimensions with asymmetric geometries, such as rib waveguides, can display nonlinear polarization effects in which the nonlinear phase difference dominates the linear contribution, provided the birefringence is sufficiently ...

Ion-Exchanged Glass Waveguide Technology: A Review [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We review the history and current status of ion exchanged glass waveguide technology. The background of ion exchange in glass and key developments in the first years of research are briefly described.
