Optical effects from the menisci of emergent rods in shallow water
Applied OpticsThe shadow created by a narrow plant stalk or rod partially submerged in water is modified by refraction through the meniscus adhering to the plant. Using laboratory experiments and Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the structure of the caustic formed by a vertical rod and discuss several aspects of it: the caustic’s shape, brightness, and color;

Bathymetry Retrieval From Hyperspectral Remote Sensing Data in Optical-Shallow Water
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2014In this paper, an algorithm for estimating shallow-water depth from hyperspectral data is proposed. This methodology is based on the different responses of shallow-water reflectance on depth and substrate type. Two parameters-similarity coefficient and Pearson correlation coefficient-are introduced to describe the different types of responses, and a ...

Decorrelating remote sensing color bands from bathymetry in optically shallow waters
IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, 2006We have developed a simple technique to decorrelate remote sensing color band data from depth in optically shallow water. The method linearizes color band data with respect to depth by subtracting an optically deepwater value from the entire waveband under consideration and taking the natural logarithm of the result.

Estimating Chlorophyll a Concentrations From Remote-Sensing Reflectance in Optically Shallow Waters
Remote Sensing of Environment, 2006A multi-spectral classification and quantification technique is developed for estimating chlorophyll a concentrations, Chl, in shallow oceanic waters where light reflected by the bottom can contribute significantly to the above-water remote-sensing reflectance spectra, Rrs(k). Classification criteria for determining bottom reflectance contributions for

Collaborative Investigations of Shallow Water Optics Problems
2003Abstract : A combination of HydroLight and Monte Carlo numerical modeling was used to quantify the effects of water column optical properties, bottom morphology, bottom material reflectances, bottom bidirectional reflectance distribution functions (BRDFs), and external environmental conditions on remote-sensing reflectances in optically shallow waters.

The development of a towed vehicle for optical mapping in shallow water
IEEE Oceanic Engineering Society. OCEANS'98. Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.98CH36259), 2002Environmental mapping in shallow water is normally carried out by divers. However, divers make poor mapping platforms. In order to meet these needs, a semi-submersible imaging vessel was developed. However, its operation has demonstrated some important limitations. The first was that the system could operate to only about 6 m depth.

Shallow Water Bathymetry And Bottom Classification By Means Of The Landsat And SPOT Optical Scanners
SPIE Proceedings, 1986Optical remote sensing of coastal and estuarine areas concerns observations of the bottom and watercolumn features. Though the spectral characteristics of the Landsat and. SPOT sensors do not allow detailed determination of concentrations of specific components suspended and dissolved in the seawater, it can provide the data on the depth and bottom ...

Abstract : LONG-TERM GOALS. An overall goal of the CoBOP program is to produce a working radiative-transfer model for selected sub-littoral environments. From a microbiological context, it is important to investigate the entire community of microorganisms associated with the benthic environments of focus, i.e., sediments and seagrass.
