Optimally adaptive transform coding

IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 1995
The optimal linear block transform for coding images is well known to be the Karhunen-Loeve transformation (KLT). However, the assumption of stationarity in the optimality condition is far from valid for images. Images are composed of regions whose local statistics may vary widely across an image.

Optimal code motion

ACM Transactions on Programming Languages and Systems, 1994
An implementation-oriented algorithm for lazy code motion is presented that minimizes the number of computations in programs while suppressing any unnecessary code motion in order to avoid superfluous register pressure.

Optimal synchronous coding

International Journal of Computer Mathematics, 2004
Novel synchronous coding schemes are introduced and relationships between optimal synchronous codes and Huffman codes are discussed. Although the problem of existence of the optimal synchronous codes has not yet resolved, we show that any synchronous code can be considered as an optimal synchronous code for some information source alphabet.

Simple code optimizations

Software: Practice and Experience, 1983
AbstractProgram optimization has received a great deal of attention for many years, which has resulted in numerous advances in compiler technology. The effectiveness of various simple optimizations has received comparably little attention during the same time period.
