Design of a Multistable Finger Prosthesis with Programmable Metamaterials

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This research article shows the development of a multistable programmble metamaterial for the use as a finger prosthesis. The material was designed on different hierarchical levels where the influence of geometrical parameters and combination of mechanical elements was explored.

THE PROBLEM OF OPTIMAL CONTROL IN THE RUN MODEL

open access: yesНаучный вестник МГТУ ГА, 2016
The article is devoted to the search of optimal control in a model of a middle-distance running in order to minimize the time spent. Control is the force exerted by a sportsman per unit mass - or rather, the acceleration.

Fabrication Routes for Ionic Conducting Fiber Strain Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ionic conducting fiber strain sensors (ICFSs) offer compliant, textile‐integrable sensing. Thus far, the commercialization of ICFSs has been constrained by fiber fabrication routes. This review provides a fabrication‐centric analysis of ICFSs correlating processing strategies with material properties and scalability.

Exact penalty functions for optimal control problems [PDF]

open access: yes
openA novel technique to solve optimal control problems with state constraints is proposed. We exploit the theory of exact penalty functions, used in mathematical programming, to construct a systematic procedure to transform two classes of problems with ...

Optimal control problems with delays in state and control variables subject to mixed control-state constraints

open access: yes, 2009
Optimal control problems with delays in state and control variables are studied. Constraints are imposed as mixed control–state inequality constraints. Necessary optimality conditions in the form of Pontryagin's minimum principle are established.

Morphology, Transport, and Dynamics of Protein Adsorption in Open‐Cell Metal Foam

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Stainless steel (SS) open‐cell foams are shown to adsorb more protein per unit area than previously reported 316L SS and chromium oxide surfaces under static and flow conditions. An integrated approach combining 3D pore imaging, flow simulation, and protein adsorption experiments characterizes the foam’s performance.

The Optimal Linear Quadratic Feedback State Regulator Problem for Index One Descriptor Systems [PDF]

open access: yes
In this note we present both necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a linear static state feedback controller if the system is described by an index one descriptor system. A priori no definiteness restrictions are made w.r.t.

Local improvements to reduced-order approximations of optimal control problems governed by diffusion-convection-reaction equation

open access: yes, 2015
We consider the optimal control problem governed by diffusion-convection-reaction equation without control constraints. The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method is used to reduce the dimension of the problem.

Materials‐Driven Additive Manufacturing for Electrical Machines: Qualification‐Oriented Design Beyond Geometric Freedom

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective reframes additive manufacturing for electrical machines as a qualification‐limited materials and architecture design problem. It links process–structure–property–performance relationships to magnetic, conducting, dielectric, and thermal property windows, highlighting where AM can enable segmented magnetic circuits, permanent magnet ...

Enhancement of the Through‐Thickness Electrical Conductivity of Carbon‐Fiber‐Reinforced Plastics Using Large Graphite Particles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
To enhance through‐thickness conductivity without sacrificing impregnation, large spherical graphite particles are intentionally employed in a low‐viscosity resin. Unlike finer conductive fillers, these particles remain outside the fiber bundles and accumulate in resin‐rich interlaminar regions during molding.
