On the Origin of Risk Sensitivity: the Energy Budget Rule Revisited

open access: yes, 2015
The risk-sensitive foraging theory formulated in terms of the (daily) energy budget rule has been influential in behavioural ecology as well as other disciplines.

From Lab to Landscape: Environmental Biohybrid Robotics for Ecological Futures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This Perspective explores environmental biohybrid robotics, integrating living tissues, microorganisms, and insects for operation in real‐world ecosystems. It traces the leap from laboratory experiments to forests, wetlands, and urban environments and discusses key challenges, development pathways, and opportunities for ecological monitoring and ...

Optimal foraging predicts the ecology but not the evolution of host specialization in bacteriophages. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2008
We explore the ability of optimal foraging theory to explain the observation among marine bacteriophages that host range appears to be negatively correlated with host abundance in the local marine environment.

Visualising and animating visual information foraging in context [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
Optimal information foraging provides a potentially useful framework for modelling, analysing, and interpreting search strategies of users through a spatial-semantic interface.

The movement of a forager: Strategies for the efficient use of resources [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
We study a simple model of a foraging animal that modifies the substrate on which it moves. This substrate provides its only resource, and the forager manage it by taking a limited portion at each visited site.

Midbrain PAG Astrocytes Modulate Mouse Defensive and Panic‐Like Behaviors

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Astrocytes in the midbrain periaqueductal gray (PAG) dynamically encode threat intensity and shape defensive action selection in mice. Real‐time Ca2+ imaging reveals robust astrocytic activation during predator odor and CO2 exposure. Aberrant astrocytic Ca2+ overactivation disrupts goal‐directed escape, biases behavior toward freezing, and induces ...

Edible Pneumatic Battery for Sustained and Repeated Robot Actuation

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This work presents an edible energy source and valve system to power soft, pneumatically driven edible robots. A chemical reaction between sodium bicarbonate and citric acid generates carbon dioxide gas, and a pressure‐triggered edible valve enables self‐repetitive motion of the edible actuator.

Children's competition in a natural setting: evidence for the ideal free distribution [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Article in pressLittle is known of the foraging abilities of children in modern cultures, especially when children forage in groups. Here we present a test of optimal foraging theory in groups of street children working for money.

Hungry for Knowledge: Octopamine Signaling Regulates Hunger‐Enhanced Olfactory Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Researchers demonstrate that hunger state facilitates both aversive and appetitive olfactory learning. Two distinct octopamine signaling pathways are involved in aversive or appetitive memory formation in the hunger state. And, hunger state also facilitates the formation of both types of memories via an evolutionarily conserved norepinephrine (the ...

Optimal Foraging Algorithm Based on Differential Evolution

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2020
The optimal foraging algorithm (OFA) was proposed by summarizing the rules of the animal foraging behavior in a group. Therefore OFA also has the defects of the swarm intelligence algorithm, such as easy to trap into local optimum and low convergence ...
