This chapter describes the optimal power flow problem. The objective of this problem is to find out the active and reactive power dispatch (output) of every generating unit in a power system that is needed to supply all loads at minimum cost, while satisfying network and technical constraints.

Optimal power flow via quadratic power flow
2011 IEEE/PES Power Systems Conference and Exposition, 2011This paper proposes an optimal power flow (OPF) algorithm based on quadratic modeling and incremental loading of the network. The proposed OPF algorithm is robust and highly efficient for large-scale power systems. Robustness is achieved by the design of the algorithm to operate on infeasible but optimal points and move towards the feasible and optimal

Power flow analysis using optimal power flow method
2015 International Conference on Innovations in Information, Embedded and Communication Systems (ICIIECS), 2015Throughout the entire world, the electric power industry has undergone a considerable change in the past decade and will continue to do so for the next several decades. In the past the electric power industry has been either a government-controlled or a government-regulated industry which existed as a monopoly in its service region.

In the basic load flow problem, the so-called control variables are specified, permitting the feasibility of solution. We recall that the control variables consist of real power generation at all generation busses except the slack bus, and voltage magnitudes at all generation busses. The specification of these control variables is not arbitrary.

Probabilistic optimal power flow
Conference Proceedings. IEEE Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering (Cat. No.98TH8341), 2002This paper presents a new formulation and solution approach to a probabilistic optimal power flow (POPF) problem. In this formulation, system demand is taken as a random vector of correlated variables, which allows us to consider the dependence between load types and locations. The POPF is clearly formulated and the optimality conditions are considered

One of the important tools for power system planning and operation is the optimal power flow (OPF). It is a power flow problem in which some control variables are adjusted to minimise or maximise an objective function, while satisfying physical and operating limits as constraints on various controls, dependent variables and functions of variables.

Optimal continuation power flow
Electric Power Systems Research, 1995The objective of this paper is to develop an algorithm for tracing the optima of equality and inequality constrained optimal power flow as a function of the load parameter. Although available optimization techniques can determine an optimal power flow solution for a fixed load, often the effects of change in load parameter on the optima for a wide ...

A practical method is given for solving the power flow problem with control variables such as real and reactive power and transformer ratios automatically adjusted to minimize instantaneous costs or losses. The solution is feasible with respect to constraints on control variables and dependent variables such as load voltages, reactive sources, and tie ...

An optimal power flow (OPF) function schedules the power system controls to optimize an objective function while satisfying a set of nonlinear equality and inequality constraints. The equality constraints are the conventional power flow equations; the inequality constraints are the limits on the control and operating variables of the system ...
