A practical implementation of optimal transmission switching

2011 4th International Conference on Electric Utility Deregulation and Restructuring and Power Technologies (DRPT), 2011
Transmission elements are traditionally treated as non-dispatchable asset in the network. Co-optimizing transmission topology and generation dispatch could be a viable way to further maximize the market surplus and improve economic efficiency. This paper will discuss the mathematical formulation of optimal transmission switching.

Optimality of Monotone Policies for Transmission Control with Switching Costs

2007 46th IEEE Conference on Decision and Control, 2007
This paper considers a time slotted transmission system over a finite state Markovian channel where in each time slot a transmission mode is dynamically selected from a finite set. There is a switching cost for changing the transmission mode and there is a channel dependent delay cost associated with each transmission mode.

Approximate optimal transmission switching

Electric Power Systems Research, 2018
Abstract Optimal transmission switching (OTS) has been proposed as a new control paradigm to improve the economics of electric power systems. The problem is formulated as mixed integer linear programming in which binary decision variables are used to represent the on and off state of transmission lines.

Flexible Transmission in the Smart Grid: Optimal Transmission Switching

2011
There is currently a national push to create a smarter, more flexible electrical grid. Traditionally, network branches (transmission lines and transformers) in the electrical grid have been modeled as fixed assets in the short run, except during times of forced outages or maintenance. This traditional view does not permit reconfiguration of the network

Network modeling using optimal transmission switching

2017 IEEE Calcutta Conference (CALCON), 2017
The aim of this paper is to identify an optimized network in an existing system which has minimized active power loss and generation cost obtainable through change in topology by reorganizing the switch status and remodeling the production schedules. The transmission system is made to participate with and function in coordination with the generating ...

Determination of Optimal Topology for Transmission Networks with Distributed Generation using Optimal Transmission Switching (OTS)

2021 IEEE Region 10 Symposium (TENSYMP), 2021
Optimal Transmission Switching (OTS) is the strategic removal of transmission lines to be out of service to optimize power system operating parameters. This technique has been established by several research to produce significant cost savings while maintaining the voltage security, stability, flexibility, and reliability for a transmission network ...

Probabilistic Security Analysis of Optimal Transmission Switching

IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2016
Optimal transmission switching (OTS) optimizes simultaneously the generation dispatch and the topology of a power system. It has been shown that taking some transmission lines out of service can significantly reduce the operating cost of the system while respecting the traditional deterministic $N-1$ security criterion of operational reliability ...

A review of transmission switching and network topology optimization

2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2011
Currently, there are multiple national directives that call for the development of a smarter electrical grid. This includes, but is not limited to, the development of advanced transmission technologies as well as optimizing the use of transmission.

An analysis of the optimal switching problem in transmission systems

2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America), 2017
This paper presents an analysis of the optimal transmission switching problem. Previous works have reported that opening a transmission line may result in the improvement of the economical operation of the electrical power system. On the other hand, experimental tests have shown that solutions provided by optimization techniques require the ...

Optimal Transmission Switching—Sensitivity Analysis and Extensions

IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2008
In this paper, we continue to analyze optimal dispatch of generation and transmission topology to meet load as a mixed integer program (MIP) with binary variables representing the state of the transmission element (line or transformer). Previous research showed a 25% savings by dispatching the IEEE 118-bus test case.
