A review of transmission switching and network topology optimization
2011 IEEE Power and Energy Society General Meeting, 2011Currently, there are multiple national directives that call for the development of a smarter electrical grid. This includes, but is not limited to, the development of advanced transmission technologies as well as optimizing the use of transmission.

Optimal Transmission Switching—Sensitivity Analysis and Extensions
IEEE Transactions on Power Systems, 2008In this paper, we continue to analyze optimal dispatch of generation and transmission topology to meet load as a mixed integer program (MIP) with binary variables representing the state of the transmission element (line or transformer). Previous research showed a 25% savings by dispatching the IEEE 118-bus test case.

The Impact of Grid Uncertainties on Optimal Transmission Switching
2019 IEEE Innovative Smart Grid Technologies - Asia (ISGT Asia), 2019Optimal transmission switching is proposed to reduce transmission congestion and optimize the system operational cost. Such switching decisions are usually determined in the day-ahead stage. However, the load and renewable generation forecasts may have significant deviations from the actual values in the next day.

An analysis of the optimal switching problem in transmission systems
2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference - Latin America (ISGT Latin America), 2017This paper presents an analysis of the optimal transmission switching problem. Previous works have reported that opening a transmission line may result in the improvement of the economical operation of the electrical power system. On the other hand, experimental tests have shown that solutions provided by optimization techniques require the ...

Promises of conic relaxations in optimal transmission switching of power systems
2017 IEEE 56th Annual Conference on Decision and Control (CDC), 2017This paper studies the problem of optimal transmission switching (OTS) for power systems. The goal is to identify a topology of the power grid that minimizes the cost of the system operation while satisfying the physical and operational constraints. Most of the existing methods are based on converting the OTS problem into a mixed-integer linear program

Optimal transmission line switching incorporating dynamic line ratings
2017 IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies Conference Europe (ISGT-Europe), 2017Real-time ampacities of overhead transmission lines vary in time with the actual operation conditions. Therefore, the security margin of power system operation can be reduced when the dynamic line rating (DLR) is considered. In this paper, the model of homogeneous dispatch with transmission switching is proposed to take into account dynamic line ...

Optimal transmission switching based on auxiliary induce function
2014 IEEE PES General Meeting | Conference & Exposition, 2014Optimal transmission switching (OTS) has become a research focus in recent years as a new operational method for power systems. OTS is modeled as a mixed-integer programming (MIP) problem and it is difficult to solve it within short time horizon. Current acceleration heuristics cannot guarantee both the computational accuracy and efficiency.
