AbstractIn the mid-1990s, Optimality Theory (OT) was an immediate success within phonological theory. Within a few years, the theory became a lingua franca of phonologists. People would not just work on the theoretical aspects of OT, but also used it to present their results that might also have easily been presented in other frameworks.

Constraints are ranked so that a lower-ranked constraint may be violated in order to satisfy a higher. OT has revolutionized phonological theory, and its insights are now being applied to other central aspects of language.

The optimality approach is a method for investigating evolutionary adaptations. It involves constructing one or more mathematical models based on the constraints and selective forces that are hypothesized to have generated a given trait by natural selection. The aim is not to demonstrate that traits are optimal.

A measure, γ, for the degree to which a game is one of skill may also be of legalistic interest in those countries where gambling is somewhat against the law.
