Optimism bias is a possible explanation.Parents interpreted hypothetical neonatal prognoses in an online survey.Good prognoses tended to be interpreted accurately, while poor prognoses were interpreted as less than the stated value.

The bias in the bias: Comparative optimism as a function of event social undesirability

We present a new event-level predictor of comparative optimism: comparative optimism is larger for more socially undesirable events. A meta-analysis shows that event social undesirability predicts comparative optimism effect sizes reported in the literature, over and above the effects of other known predictors. Four experiments corroborate this finding

This paper studies an admission control M/M/1 queueing system. It shows that the only gain (average) optimal stationary policies with gain and bias which satisfy the optimality equation are of control limit type, that there are at most two and, if there are two, they occur consecutively.

We consider a finite capacity queueing system in which each arriving customer offers a reward. A gatekeeper decides based on the reward offered and the space remaining whether each arriving customer should be accepted or rejected. The gatekeeper only receives the offered reward if the customer is accepted.

The bias terms in the likelihood functions of the optimal quadratic receiver are compared. In a Rician-fading frequency-nonselective channel with additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) the terms are identical, and can be neglected if the transmitted signals have identical envelopes.

The null hypothesis is that the output mean does not change throughout the simulation run. The alternative hypothesis specifies a general transient mean function.
