Optimism bias in understanding neonatal prognoses

Journal of Perinatology, 2020
Discrepancies between physician and parent neonatal prognostic expectations are common. Optimism bias is a possible explanation.Parents interpreted hypothetical neonatal prognoses in an online survey.Good prognoses tended to be interpreted accurately, while poor prognoses were interpreted as less than the stated value.

Neural mechanisms mediating optimism bias

Nature, 2007
Humans expect positive events in the future even when there is no evidence to support such expectations. For example, people expect to live longer and be healthier than average, they underestimate their likelihood of getting a divorce, and overestimate their prospects for success on the job market.

Bias Optimality in Controlled Queueing Systems

Journal of Applied Probability, 1998
This paper studies an admission control M/M/1 queueing system. It shows that the only gain (average) optimal stationary policies with gain and bias which satisfy the optimality equation are of control limit type, that there are at most two and, if there are two, they occur consecutively.

Statistical bias in optimized VBM

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
The recent discovery of methodological flaws in experimental design and analysis in neuroscience research has raised concerns over the validity of certain techniques used in routine analyses and their corresponding findings. Such concerns have centered around selection bias whereby data is inadvertently manipulated such that the resulting analysis ...

Optimal Reorientation Maneuver of Bias Momentum Spacecraft

Journal of Guidance, Control, and Dynamics, 1997
Summary: Optimal control theory is applied to find the optimal rotational maneuver strategy of a pitch bias momentum spacecraft. Time-optimal and fuel/time-optimal control laws are each investigated separately. Conventional time-optimal control theory is adopted taking into account the gyroscopic effect embedded in the bias momentum spacecraft.

Optimal Agency Bias and Regulatory Review

SSRN Electronic Journal, 2013
AbstractWhy do bureaucratic principals appoint agents who hold different policy views from themselves? We posit an explanation based on the interplay between two types of agency costs: shirking on information production and policy bias. Principals employ biased agents because they shirk less.

Bias optimization for switched capacitor amplifiers

IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II: Analog and Digital Signal Processing, 1997
Bias optimization is one of the most important design issues in many low power applications. Several biasing schemes for switched capacitor applications are analyzed in this paper from the settling time point of view. A bias circuit is described that provides the best tradeoff between the slew-rate and the unity gain bandwidth of a single dominant-pole

Optimization of Bias in Thermistor Radiation Detectors II: Practical Bias Networks

Applied Optics, 1969
Bridge bias networks with better performance than those of Part I are introduced. Linear equations for bridge null changes caused by ambient temperature and bias voltage variations are presented. They are discussed in relation to direct coupling.
