Toward Practical Li‐Ion Cells With Li/Mn‐Rich Layered Oxide Cathodes: A Techno‐Economic Perspective on Material and Cell Design

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Li/Mn‐rich layered oxide cathodes should be designed systematically according to their phase diagram. Starting from a common composition (point 1), the Li‐richness can be reduced (point 2), the Co content can be lowered (point 3), and finally, the Ni to Co ratio can be adjusted.

Surface‐Stabilized and Lightweight Metallic PET Fabrics for Flexible and Energy‐Dense Li‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
The electrochemical stabilities of metallic polyethylene terephthalate (MPET) current collectors. The pouch cell incorporating MPETs demonstrates a 20% increase in energy density, along with remarkable flexibility. It maintains a capacity retention of 78.4% after 1500 bending cycles under curvature radii as small as 1 mm.

Selective Lithium Recovery via Stepwise Transition Metal Crystallization in a Natural Deep Eutectic Solvent

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A biodegradable, natural deep eutectic solvent (DES) is designed for preferential lithium (Li) leaching from various cathodes under mild conditions (60 °C, 8 h). Compared to traditional acids and DESs, it achieves >96% Li leaching from black mass with minimal transition metal dissolution via a stepwise reduction, complexation, hydrolysis, and ...

Heterogeneity of the Dominant Causes of Performance Loss in End‐of‐Life Cathodes and Their Consequences for Direct Recycling

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
Direct recyling of Li‐ion battery materials promises a low‐cost path towards a secure domestic supply of critical materials for batteries. Using cathode material from an end‐of‐life commercial Li‐ion cell, this work identifies the primary degradation mechanisms that diminish the performance of directly reused cathode materials and includes a discussion
