How does one tell the difference between one molecule or mixture of molecules from another? Chemical sensing seeks to probe physical or chemical properties of molecular or ionic species (i.e., analytes) and transform that information into a useful and distinguishable output. The olfactory system of animals is the prototype of chemical sensing. Even for

Advances in Optoelectronics [PDF]
Important progresses have been made in ultrafast optoelectronics where sources, modulators, and transducers have demonstrated response well in the picosecond and subpicosecond regime. In addition, some recent works have demonstrated the important role that ultrafast optoelectronics could play in electronics.

Optoelectronic devices in optoelectronic signal processors [PDF]
A neural network is one architecture for an optoelectronic signal processor which operates in a dynamic parallel mode. The basic node is a circuit which has multiple inputs and a single output which is in general fanned out to several next stage inputs. A key feature is that an adjustable synaptic weight is applied to each input.

A great goal of optics in computing is the eventual failure of electrical interconnects. This leads to two guiding principles for smart pixel technologies, which integrate optoelectronic devices to electronics for optical read-in/out. One, that the electronics be state-of-the-art, or, in other words, not compromised by the integration with ...

Abstract The properties of light detectors and light emitting diodes (LEDs) are discussed. Electro-optic, photorefractive, and nonlinear materials are introduced. The phenomenon of phase conjugation is explained. Interaction between acoustic and light waves is shown to be possible.
