Approval of the First Nonprescription Oral Contraceptive Pill

In July 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Opill (norgestrel 0.075 mg), a progestin-only tablet to prevent pregnancy to be used without a prescription. Although progestin-only birth control pills were approved in 1973, it has taken 50 years for the first oral contraceptive pills to be sold over the counter.
