Demonstration of actin in oral epithelial cells
European Journal of Oral Sciences, 1978abstract— Two human sera with antibodies against smooth muscle were used to investigate the distribution of actin in moving oral epithelial cells by immunocytochemical methods. Epithelial outgrowths from explants of rat and human oral mucosa showed a constant positive staining in the peripheral parts of the marginal cells but not in the more central ...

Epithelial cell kinetics in oral leukoplakia
Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine, 1995Cell proliferation in oral leukoplakia has been studied by estimating the number of cells in the S phase using in vitro3H thymidine labelling. The labelling index was found to be increased 1.77 fold in leukoplakias compared to the clinically normal control sites (P < 0.005).

Candida-induced Oral Epithelial Cell Responses
Mycopathologia, 2006Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC), caused by Candida albicans, is the most common oral infection in HIV(+) persons. Oral epithelial cells are considered important for innate host defense against OPC with production of cytokines in response to C. albicans and the ability to inhibit Candida growth in vitro.

Sterol metabolism and oral epithelial cell growth
In Vitro Cellular & Developmental Biology - Animal, 1993Previous studies have demonstrated that as the density of cultured oral epithelial cells increases, there is a concomitant increase in phospholipids and cholesterol ester synthesis and a decrease in that of cholesterol and sterol precursors. Other studies have suggested that the effects of exogenous cholesterol sulfate may be similar to growth ...

Freeze-fracturing of oral epithelial cells in pemphigus
Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, 1982Biopsies from the oral mucosa of three patients (two with pemphigus vulgaris and one with pemphigus erythematosus) were taken for both freeze-fracturing and thin-sectioning studies. Oral mucosa from a clinically healthy volunteer was used as control. The samples collected from both the involved and uninvolved oral mucosa of pemphigus patients showed ...

A simplified method for culture of oral epithelial cells
Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine, 1985In order to facilitate studies on oral mucosa a simplified method for the culture of oral epithelial cells from adult hamsters was developed. Cheek pouches were excised and epithelial cells isolated by collagenase digestion. These were grown in CM‐V medium containing spermine in order to inhibit overgrowth of the epithelial cells by fibroblasts.

Bisphosphonate effects on the behaviour of oral epithelial cells and oral fibroblasts
Archives of Oral Biology, 2011Bisphosphonates (BPs) like Zometa (ZA) are widely used to treat complications of bony metastases in cancer patients. A serious adverse event occurs in 1-12% of patients on BP therapy, osteonecrosis of the jaw (BPONJ). BPONJ develops after oral trauma and is manifested by poor wound healing and soft-tissue breakdown followed by exposure and necrosis of ...

Microstructure of the Superficial Epithelial Cells of the Human Oral Mucosa
Ultrastructural Pathology, 2013The apical cell membrane of the oral mucosa adjacent to the saliva interface is thrown into membrane folds, termed microplicae (MPL) with variation in morphology. The present study classifies morphological changes undergone by MPL into qualitative and quantitative categories.Oral mucosal specimens were obtained from 32 healthy patients.

Differential Attachment of Oral Treponemes to Monolayers of Epithelial Cells
Journal of Periodontology, 1997This in vitro study describes the attachment properties of several oral treponemes to monolayers of epithelial cells and the effect of epithelial cell confluence on treponeme attachment. Four serotypes of Treponema denticola, Treponema scoliodontum, three subspecies of Treponema socranskii and Treponema vincentii were tested with monolayers of ...

Binding and uptake of N‐nitrosonornicotine by oral epithelial cells
Journal of Oral Pathology & Medicine, 1990N‐nitrosonornicotine (NNN), a significant nitrosamine component of tobacco binds to and is taken up by cells prior to its activation by intracellular enzymes. A variety of factors may affect the binding of substances to a cell including the cell type, medium composition and the cell membrane lipid composition. This study examines the binding and uptake
