Potentially Malignant Disorders of the Oral Cavity
2012The term ‘potentially malignant disorder’ (PMD) of the oral cavity was created by a working group of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Pathology and Precancer. It is currently used to describe ‘white plaques of questionable risk, having excluded other known diseases and diseases that carry no increased risk for cancer’ [1].

2020A proportion of oral cancers stem from preexisting oral potentially malignant disorders. These are a group of disorders whose natural history is not clearly characterized but there is sufficient evidence that some may transform to cancer. The most common oral potentially malignant disorder is oral leukoplakia.
