Effects of Whole-Body Cryotherapy Combined With Conventional Obesity Management Versus Obesity Management Alone: A Clinical Trial. [PDF]

open access: yesObesity (Silver Spring)
ABSTRACT Objective To investigate whether whole‐body cryotherapy (WBC) enhances weight loss, brown adipose tissue (BAT) activation, and metabolic outcomes during obesity management. Methods Nineteen adults with obesity were assigned to a 12‐month lifestyle‐based obesity management intervention with 28 WBC sessions (−110°C, 3–4 min, ~2 × week) over the ...

Traditional Knowledge and Conservation Priorities of Eurasian Red Squirrel (<i>Sciurus vulgaris</i>) in Finland. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) has played an important role in Finnish traditional culture and livelihoods from pre‐historic times. Convergence of observations points to the case where the iconic mammal of the northern forests is in decline and migrating to the urban habitats, with a number of important consequences.

Changes in electrocardiogram parameters during acute nonshivering cold exposure and associations with brown adipose tissue activity, plasma catecholamine levels, and brachial blood pressure in healthy adults. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysiol Rep, 2021
Sympathetic activity causes changes in electrocardiogram (ECG) during cold exposure and the changes have been studied mostly during hypothermia and less during mild acute nonshivering cold exposure. Cold‐induced sympathetic activity also activates brown adipose tissue (BAT) and increases arterial blood pressure (BP) and plasma catecholamine levels.

Reconstruction of Chronic Proximal Hamstring Tear: Description of a Surgical Technique. [PDF]

open access: yesArthrosc Tech, 2021
Abstract While proximal hamstring tears at the myotendinous junction are common sports‐related injuries that are often successfully treated nonoperatively, complete avulsions from the origin on the ischial tuberosity are less common and better treated with surgical repair to prevent significant functional limitations and ongoing weakness. The diagnosis

P21.1 at PETRA III - a high-energy X-ray diffraction beamline for physics and chemistry. [PDF]

open access: yesJ Synchrotron Radiat
A detailed description of the technical specifications of beamline P21.1 at the PETRA III storage ring is given. It serves as a reference for the beamline user community and, by giving a number of scientific examples, we hope to inspire future experiments.Beamline P21.1 at PETRA III uses high‐energy photons for the investigation of materials structure ...

Orthoptera of the peat bogs and wet mountain grasslands in Orava region (NW Slovakia) [PDF]

open access: yesFragmenta Faunistica, 2012
Abstract: Peat bogs are habitats of European importance, but only few data exists on crickets and grasshoppers living in these habitats. Altogether 22 species of Orthoptera (6 Tettigonioidea, 2 Tetrigoidea and 14 Acrididoidea) were found in 16 selected localities, in peat bogs and wet mountain meadows in the Orava region in 2008–2011.

Grazing hay meadows: History, distribution, and ecological context

open access: yesApplied Vegetation Science, Volume 26, Issue 2, April/June 2023., 2023
Grazing hay meadows, once widespread across Europe, became limited to rural regions with maintained traditional agriculture. Spring and autumn grazing, along with corralling and manuring of hay meadows, were integral parts of all farming systems existing in the Carpathian Mountains in parallel before agricultural intensification. We describe details on

Plot size matters: Toward comparable species richness estimates across plot‐based inventories

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 12, Issue 6, June 2022., 2022
Species richness is a commonly used biodiversity indicator. Because it strongly depends on the area sampled, comparability of species richness estimates across inventories using different plot sizes is not directly possible. We provide a methodological framework based on rarefaction curves to tackle this challenge.
