Management implications of diagnosing orbital abscess as subperiosteal orbital abscess
Rhinology Journal, 2010Orbital complications of rhinosinusitis can be life-threatening. Accurate diagnosis by computerized tomography (CT) scanning, immediate administration of intravenous antibiotics and surgical drainage are the recommended management strategy. Faulty diagnosis by CT scan may lead to visual deterioration, intracranial complications and even fatality.

Orbital Plasmacytoma Mimicking an Orbital Abscess
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2017An 83-year-old male with a 15-month history of multiple myeloma presented with acute onset of swelling, redness, and pain around his right eye. CT scan was consistent with an orbital abscess. The patient was taken to the operating room for drainage of the orbital abscess. Abnormal tissue was encountered intraoperatively so biopsies were taken.

Intracranial Abscess as a Complication of Subperiosteal Abscess of the Orbit
Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 2001To describe the potential complication of intracranial abscess in the setting of orbital abscess. We retrospectively reviewed case reports and the literature. Three patients were found to have pansinusitis progressing to subperiosteal abscess of the orbit and subsequent intracranial abscess.Three patients, ages 14, 26, and 57 years, with concurrent ...

Orbital Abscess Following Blepharoplasty
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1984Orbital abscess following blepharoplasty is surprisingly rare. The diagnosis may not be obvious from the physical signs alone. Ultrasonography is a helpful diagnostic tool in such problems. The abscess cavity can be visualized. A case of orbital abscess is presented.

Subperiosteal Abscess of the Orbit
Ophthalmology, 1983Seven cases of subperiosteal abscess (SPA) of the orbit are reported. Anatomic relationships shared by the orbits, paranasal sinuses, and facial venous system explain the rapid development of SPA after periorbital infection. Computed tomography and echography allow distinction between SPA and other stages of orbital inflammation that are often ...

Orbital abscess masquerading as a rhabdomyosarcoma
Journal of American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, 2000Although orbital cellulitis is the most common cause of acute-onset proptosis with inflammatory signs in a child, the clinician should always be alert to the possibility of rhabdomyosarcoma. We describe an unusual presentation of acute-onset nonaxial proptosis of the left orbit without sinus disease or systemic toxicity in a 6-year-old boy.

Approaches to subperiosteal orbital abscesses
European Archives of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, 2012The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the epidemiology, clinical features, management and complications of subperiosteal orbital abscesses (SPOA)-a serious complication of rhinosinusitis. Retrospective data of 36 patients with SPOA secondary to acute rhinosinusitis from January 1998 to December 2011 were evaluated. Patients were analyzed in terms of

Propionibacterium acnes Orbital Abscess
Archives of Ophthalmology, 1990Propionibacterium acnes is a ubiquitous, gram-positive, anaerobic organism. Long thought to be a harmless commensal species, it has become implicated in ocular disease. We report a P acnes orbital abscess that, to our knowledge, is the first reported case of a primary P acnes infection of the orbit in the ophthalmic literature. Report of a Case.

Orbital Abscess With Unusual Features
Ophthalmic Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery, 2009To report a series of 7 cases of orbital abscess with unusual features that may mimic other cystic orbital lesions.Retrospective study of all cases of orbital cellulitis/abscess treated at our center, over 1 year, highlighting cases with unusual features.Thirty-one cases were studied, where orbital cellulitis/abscess was the final diagnosis.

Endoscopic Management of Orbital Abscesses
Otolaryngologic Clinics of North America, 2006Orbital complications of sinusitis have declined in the postantibiotic era. Nonetheless, the development of a subperiosteal or intraorbital abscess remains a serious condition that is best managed through a multidisciplinary approach. Surgical management is almost always indicated when orbital collections are present, and medical therapy plays a ...
