Imaging of orbital floor fractures

SUMMARYThe aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of plain films and computed tomography (CT) in defining inferior orbital fractures and any muscle involvement. Forty‐four patients with final diagnosis of orbital floor fractures in the period 1990–94 were retrospectively studied.

Unilateral Orbital Floor Fractures

Ninety patients operated on, on suspicion of unilateral orbital floor fractures are described. Age, sex, and etiology are given. Operative indication is examined and related to the operative findings. Fifty-six of the patients had fractures requiring transplantation, 24 had fractures which did not. Ten patients had no fractures.

The aim of this study was to review the presentation, management, and outcomes for children with these injuries.A retrospective review was performed on 72 consecutive children with orbital floor fractures over a 21-year period.Seventy-two patients with 76 fractures were identified.

Traumatic defects of the orbital floor

Summary A high incidence of traumatic orbital floor defects in 238 consecutive cases of facial injury is reported and studied. The possible consequences of such defects are discussed, aids to their diagnosis are outlined and the case for early surgical exploration is put forward.

The orbital floor slopes forwards and downwards in relation to the Frankfurt horizontal plane and its major part is made up of the orbital surface of the maxilla. Just before it reaches the inferior orbital margin the floor usually turns upwards again for a short distance.
