A review: Molecular identification of orchid mycorrhiza

open access: yesAdvances in Horticultural Science
Orchids are a diverse and widespread family of flowering plants, with over 25,000 known species and more than 100,000 hybrids and cultivars. Orchids are characterised by their often showy and highly specialised flowers and have unique and intricate ...

Selecting the Optimal DFT Functionals for Reproducing the UV‐Vis Properties of Transition‐Metal Photocatalysts

open access: yesChemistry–Methods, Volume 5, Issue 7, July 2025.
The TMPHOTCAT‐137 database is introduced and employed for benchmarking DFT functionals. The database contains the digitized UV‐vis spectra for 137 transition metal photocatalysts together with optimized vertical absorption spectra calculated using 14 different DFT functionals.

Freshwater Foraminifera Biodiversity in New England (USA): Evaluation of Field Sites and a Botanical Garden

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
We explore trends in freshwater foraminifera richness and relative abundance across several low‐pH bog locations, including different ecological sites within each location, and from one established botanical garden habitat using a metabarcoding molecular technique. Our main findings confirm the relatively rare nature of freshwater foraminifera, and yet

Ecological Isolation Maintains the Species Boundaries Between Two Sympatric Cycas From Southwest China

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 7, July 2025.
The study reveals that sympatric Cycas species (C. pectinata and C. simplicipinna) maintain strict species boundaries without hybridization, driven by reproductive isolation mechanisms (divergent coning times and pollinator specificity) and ecological niche differentiation (habitat preferences, soil pH differences).

Social mechanics of gifting bear bile in Việt Nam

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 7, Issue 7, Page 1521-1535, July 2025.
Abstract The illegal wildlife trade is a major cause of global diversity loss. In Southeast Asia and particularly in Việt Nam, the consumption of wildlife products is mostly driven by demand for food and traditional medicine products. One key example of this in Việt Nam is the use of bear bile. While bear bile is one of the most well‐researched illegal

“Please list your favourite …”: How to measure online plant knowledge as a component of plant awareness

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 7, Issue 4, Page 1137-1148, July 2025.
Plant awareness disparity is a widespread phenomenon in modern societies. It erroneously implies that plants are not necessary for humans. Understanding what plants people know and can describe is crucial for evaluating one of four central aspects of plant awareness disparity.
