Extranuclear function of Arabidopsis HOOKLESS1 regulates pleiotropic developmental processes in a non‐cell‐autonomous manner

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 246, Issue 2, Page 616-630, April 2025.
Summary N‐acetyltransferase HOOKLESS1 (HLS1) in Arabidopsis, a recognized pivotal factor in hook formation, is also implicated in multifaceted developmental processes including plastochron and leaf senescence. However, its molecular function remains to be elucidated.

Of gods and men: The gift of bicameral mentality in Lake Atitlán's Mayan oral literature

open access: yesAnthropology of Consciousness, Volume 36, Issue 1, Spring 2025.
Abstract This study investigates contemporary Mayan oral stories through the lens of Julian Jaynes's theory on the origin of consciousness, aiming to identify a potential connection between the literary elements of these narratives and traits of pre‐consciousness outlined by Jaynes.

Life cycle and morphogenetic differentiation in heteromorphic cell types of a cosmopolitan marine microalga

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 245, Issue 5, Page 1969-1984, March 2025.
Summary Gephyrocapsa huxleyi is a prevalent, bloom‐forming phytoplankton species in the oceans. It exhibits a complex haplodiplontic life cycle, featuring a diploid‐calcified phase, a haploid phase and a third ‘decoupled’ phase produced during viral infection. Decoupled cells display a haploid‐like phenotype, but are diploid.

The aerial epidermis is a major site of quinolizidine alkaloid biosynthesis in narrow‐leafed lupin

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 245, Issue 5, Page 2052-2068, March 2025.
Summary Lupins are promising protein crops that accumulate toxic quinolizidine alkaloids (QAs) in the seeds, complicating their end‐use. QAs are synthesized in green organs (leaves, stems, and pods) and a subset of them is transported to the seeds during fruit development.

qPCR‐based quantification reveals high plant host‐specificity of endophytic colonization levels in leaves

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Botany, Volume 112, Issue 1, January 2025.
Abstract Premise Despite the high functional importance of endophytes, we still have limited understanding of the biotic and abiotic factors that influence colonization of plant hosts along major ecological gradients and lack quantitative estimates of their colonization extent.
